Sears 8X Southwest Points, up to 21X possible

Today and tomorrow, the Southwest Rapid Rewards Shopping portal is offering 8 points per dollar at Sears. With a little extra work, you can increase this deal to as much as 21 points per dollar.  Points earned through the shopping portal do count towards the Southwest Companion Pass (which requires earning 110,000 points per calendar year).  So, if you are close to earning enough points for the companion pass, deals like this can be a great way to bridge the gap.  Keep in mind, though, that the points can take a couple of months to fully post and won’t count towards the Companion Pass until then.

Sears 8X:

5X Credit card earnings

And, don’t forget that both the Chase Freedom card and Discover It card earn 5X this quarter at Sears.com (among other places).

Double dip with gift cards

Sears is unusual among online merchants in that they explicitly allow portal earnings from both buying gift cards and using them. This makes it very easy to double dip: go through the portal once to buy gift cards and go through again to use them.

NOTE: Do not buy physical (by mail) gift cards with your Freedom card as it will be unlikely to earn the 4th quarter 5X bonus (since physical gift cards are sold by Kmart).  A better option is to buy e-gift cards, or reload an existing gift card (either e-gift card or physical gift card).

Gift card order verification

With most gift card orders, Sears calls to verify your identity before releasing the purchase.  If the process takes too long, you can expedite the process by calling Sears first.  Have your order number(s) handy and call this number:

1-888-396-5299

Be prepared to answer a number of questions to prove your identity.

Only 15 gift cards per order

Sears.com will accept no more than 15 gift cards per order when using gift cards to buy merchandise.

    • I’ve had the following things happen in recent gift card purchases / reloads:
      1. Instant online verification, and received the gift card credit instantly
      2. No instant verification. Had to call
      3. Instant online verification, but hours later still received verification call

  1. Always nice to see a good Sears portal bonus. Also, United’s portal is at 9 miles for Sears today if you prefer United miles to Southwest ones. No companion pass option for United obviously, but same rules apply otherwise.

  2. Actually, I just noticed the 9 miles on United may be targeted. I only see it available when I’m logged into the United portal — otherwise, it drops to 6 miles. United routinely gives more portal miles to users who also hold their credit card (which I do) but I don’t know if that’s the targeting here. In any case, it might be worth logging into the United portal first if you’re looking for extra Sears miles today.
