Alaska Airlines is offering a very generous promotion for new members — join mileage plan before April 30th and take your first flight with Alaska before September 30th, 2017 and get 5,000 bonus miles. That is a great bonus for joining as we rarely see loyalty program signup bonuses like this anymore.

Alaska Mileage Plan 5000 Join bonus

A couple of months ago, Alaska was giving 10,000 miles to members of Virgin America Elevate who created a new Mileage Plan account and linked it, so they have previously been quite generous in wooing a larger audience. Still, this is an excellent bonus for anyone who is not yet a member of Mileage Plan. Award flights start at just 5,000 miles for short-haul flights, making this a no-brainer for west coast residents with access to many of those short-haul 5k routes. You will also earn miles for the paid flight required to earn the bonus 5k — Alaska awards 1 mile per mile flown, meaning that a transcontinental flight will already earn ~5,000 miles round trip. With this 5,000 mile bonus, you could earn more than 10,000 miles total for a paid transcon round trip. As a reminder, here are Mileage Plan’s new and improved domestic discount distance-based award ticket prices — check One Mile at a Time for more information on them:

  • Tickets covering a distance of under 700 miles cost 5,000 miles
  • Tickets covering a distance of 701-1,400  miles cost 7,500 miles
  • Tickets covering a distance of 1,401-2,100 miles cost 10,000 miles

Of course, Alaska’s award charts for partner airlines are also excellent. With a range of partner airlines that includes America, British, Air France, Emirates, Japan Airlines, Cathay Pacific and many more, there are numerous opportunities to credit paid flights to Alaska and earn 1 mile per mile flown. It has long been a favorite niche program that is only getting better. An extra five thousand miles is icing on the cake for new members.
