A reader has reached out (thanks, Sophia!) to share an excellent targeted offer she received: spend $6,000 on her Citi Advantage card(s) between registration and August 31, 2017 to receive American Airlines Gold Status.

The Offer

  • Spend $6,000 on your Citi AAdvantage card(s) from date of enrollment through August 31, 2017 to achieve AAdvantage Gold Status though January 2018

Key Terms

  • Cumulative total of $6k in purchases applies if you have more than one Citi AAdvantage card
  • Status will automatically take effect within 10-14 days after meeting spend
  • All purchases must post on or before August 31, 2017

Quick Thoughts

This looks like a nice and easy offer to grab status if you don’t currently have any with American. While AA’s Gold status isn’t the most rewarding, it provides Oneworld Ruby and normally requires 25,000 EQM’s and $3,000 in EQDs. Being able to get that for spending just $6,000 on a credit card is a pretty sweet deal. Here are the benefits of AA Gold from AA’s site:

AAdvantage Gold

  • Complimentary auto-requested upgrades on flights 500 miles or less
  • 24-hour upgrade window
  • 40% elite mileage bonus
  • 50% off main cabin extra seats (complimentary at check-in
  • Complimentary preferred seats
  • 1 free checked bag

If you are a Citi AAdvantage credit card holder, keep your eye out for an email with the subject line “Enroll to earn AAdvantage Gold Status“.

Huh. I received the same offer for AA Gold elite status… for FREE! I get from June til late September. I’m a regular AA member with no elite status whatsoever. Guess what? It’s unlikely that I’ll even fly AA in the coming months since I’m really busy this summer and already have all my travel plans set. Also, I’m really disappointed with the overall lack of availability for AA awards, so why accumulate more miles I can’t use? I did sign up, in case an urgent situation comes up and I have to fly AA, but even with the status being FREE, it doesn’t excite me.

I smell desperation in the air.

And, please tell me where American obtained that picture. I don’t believe a stemmed champagne glass exists in First Class on an American plane, let alone the business class cabin featured in the picture.

I received the same offer, however, they are asking me to spend a net of $15,000. Which might. It be worth it.

Being AA Lifetime GLD I can tell you this is a worthless offer. GLD (and Plat as well) benefits have diluted so much over the years, now the only additional benefits over a credit card holder is being able to select better seats 24 hours before flight for free, (does not apply to award travel), free same day standby, and that pretty much about it – plus if one is willing to pay for the 500 Miler upgrade sticker to upgrade (subject to availability).

I would rather spend that money to earn far more valuable currency than AA miles given the dead spiral of AAdvantage award availability.
