A new Amex Offer showed up on a couple of my cards today: 2X Membership Rewards at Staples.com (an extra 1 point per dollar) through December 21, 2017.

The Deal

  • Get one additional Membership Rewards point for each dollar you spend
  • Targeted (perhaps highly so)

Key Terms

Directly from the Amex Offer text (some key exclusions bolded):

ENROLLMENT/ELIGIBLE CARDS: Must add offer to Card and use the same Card to redeem. Only U.S.-issued American Express® Cards that are enrolled in the Membership Rewards® program at the time of purchase are eligible. Corporate Cards and all prepaid card products are not eligible. Limit 1 enrolled Card per American Express Card online account. Offer is non-transferable. Your enrollment of an eligible American Express Card for this offer extends only to that Card. Your enrollment does not extend to any other Cards that may be linked to your account (such as Additional Cards). ELIGIBLE PURCHASES: Valid on US website only. Not valid on purchases shipped outside of the US. Excludes purchases through third party or affiliated links from Staples.com. Excludes Quill, Smilemaker, Staples Business Advantage, Staples 4 Government, Staples Toner Services, Staples Technology Solutions, Staples Promotional Products, Staples Print Solutions, Copy and Printing Services, Staples Contract and Commercial, Staples App Center, Staples Industrial, Staples Book Rental, Staples Simplexity, Staples Share Fund, Coastwide Labs, Catalog and Staples Fundraising. Purchases may fall outside of the offer period in some cases due to a delay in merchants submitting transactions to us or if the purchase date differs from the date you made the transaction (for example, the purchase date for online orders may be the shipping date). If American Express does not receive information that identifies your transaction as qualifying for the offer, you will not receive the additional points. For example, your transaction will not qualify if it is not made directly with the merchant. In addition, in most cases, you may not receive the additional Membership Rewards points if your transaction is made with an electronic wallet or through a third party. EARNING POINTS: You will receive 1 additional Membership Rewards point per dollar spent using your enrolled American Express Card in accordance with the terms of this offer. These additional points are in addition to any points you would normally receive for purchases on your Card under the terms of the Membership Rewards program. When we calculate the additional points benefit for Amex EveryDay® Card products, points awarded under this offer will not be included. Additional points will be credited to your Membership Rewards program account within 90 days after charges appear on your billing statement. Terms and conditions for the Membership Rewards program apply. Visit membershiprewards.com/terms or call 1-800-AXP-EARN (297-3276) for more information. Participating partners and available rewards are subject to change without notice. The value of Membership Rewards points varies according to how you choose to use them. To learn more, go to www.membershiprewards.com/pointsinfo. By adding an offer to a Card, you agree that American Express may send you communications about the offer.

Quick Thoughts

I received this offer on two Business Platinum cards. While there are certainly cards that earn a more valuable reward at Staples (5X/5%), this offer will be very useful should a Staples Amex Offer show up between now and the end of the year (as this one is good though December 31, 2017). My wife did not get this offer on any of her Membership-Rewards earning cards, so I imagine this may be highly targeted. I was particularly hopeful that it would show up on her Everyday Preferred card as 1X in addition to the 1.5 for making 30 transactions or more per month would have brought it up to 2.5X at Staples.com. However, no dice there. If you have the offer on a card other than the Business Platinum, let us know in the comments so we can know if there is a pattern on these.
