Back-to-School Portal Promotions

4

Update: We’ve added Delta and United to the list and will continue to add if and when other portals follow suit.

Several airline shopping portals are running promotions awarding bonus miles for meeting spending thresholds. So far, we have seen promotions from both American Airlines and Southwest Airlines. Back-to-school promotions are common at this time of year, and it’s great to see a couple already starting.

Quick Thoughts

Remember that these promotions are based on your cumulative spending — the most you can earn in either case is 2,000 total miles/points per person (you do not receive separate bonuses with each spending threshold but rather one lump sum bonus after the promo). If you have multiple people in your household and more than $500 or $550 in purchases to make, consider making separate accounts for different household members (provided you will later have a way to accumulate enough points for an award). While these bonuses aren’t enough to compel me to make any purchases, they add a nice bonus on top (4X/3.63X when hitting the top threshold). Be sure to figure this bonus in when comparing rates at Cashbackmonitor.com.
