Does a hotel booking trigger the Boxed offer?

This morning, Greg wrote about the Top 5 Category 5 Marriotts in the world, where you take advantage of a 7-night Marriott Travel package or a Category 1-5 free night from the credit card or MegaBonus promotions. Last night, I made a hotel booking of my own in an attempt to take advantage of an entirely different offer… We recently reported on several versions of an Amex Offer out for Boxed.com: Spend $150 and get…

Capital One has increased the signup bonus on the Capital One Venture Rewards card to 50,000 Capital One miles after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first 3 months — enough for $500 worth of travel expenses. That beats the previous signup bonus by 10,000 points and matches the best offer we’ve seen on this card over the past couple of years. Capital One Venture Rewards Card The Offer Earn 50,000 miles after spending $3,000 in the first 3 months…

I used Amtrak points….for a train

This morning, Greg wrote a post called, “Loyalty alchemy. Turn Amtrak coal into United gold, and more…“. In it, he explains how you can take advantage of some interesting transfer opportunities to turn Amtrak and Choice hotel points into United miles. There is some interesting value to be had for sure — see his post for more on that. I loved Greg’s analysis, and some readers even commented on their plans to take advantage of…

United to send out digital / downloadable club passes

One of the benefits of the Chase United MileagePlus Explorer Card is 2 annual United Club passes. Those paper passes have always been mailed around your anniversary date. However, as has been reported elsewhere, Chase has started sending out mailers indicating that beginning in November, passes will be sent digitally. Here’s the letter I received today: As you can see, the letter indicates that the club passes will be automatically added to my MileagePlus account…

Buy Avios for ~1.46 cents or less

Loyalty Lobby reports a sale on Avios through a French website that might be a good deal depending on your use of the points (and how easily you could otherwise manufacture points). Packages are available that work out to 1.46 cents each or less, which isn’t a rate at which I’d buy Avios just to hold them, but they could be more valuable than the purchase price in the right scenario. The Deal Buy Avios at…

Fairmont free night certificates are posting

Earlier this year, the Chase Fairmont Visa Signature card was discontinued (See: Bye bye Fairmont card. I hardly knew ya). Greg wrote about how to maximize value with credit card spend before this card was converted to the Chase Sapphire Preferred (See: Rocking Fairmont credit card free nights and elite benefits). Part of that strategy involved spending $12K to earn an additional free night certificate. Recently, several readers have posted questions inquiring as to the…

Australia from $688 RT nonstop from Los Angeles

In today’s Thrifty Traveler Premium email, I noticed a nice deal to Australia — Qantas is offering direct flights nonstop on its new 787-9 from Los Angeles to Melbourne, Australia from $693 round trip. As I explored dates, I found some dates that are a few dollars less on Virgin Australia — from $688 round trip nonstop. Flights are available for ten or fifteen bucks more to Brisbane or Sydney, and you can find round trip fares out of Dallas and New York…

Europe on major alliances from $400 round trip (from New York, Seattle, Chicago, & more)

Over the weekend, prices have dropped to as low as $400 on flights to Europe from as soon as next month through as far out as next summer on major alliance flights (which means a free checked bag and seat selection in most cases). The Points Guy has a number of examples; there are also some below (click the images to go to Google Flights). This is not an exhaustive list, but rather a sampling of…
