Piecing together Delta awards for great value to Hawaii and Europe

Ever since Delta did away with their award charts, they’ve maintained that the award price you see online is the award price.  Period.  And, supposedly, there’s nothing you can do about high award prices except wait and hope that prices come down. In the good old days, there was something you could do about it.  You could find saver award space segment by segment and string the segments together for a cheap award.  Here’s a…

Transfer SPG 1 to 3 to… Choice?

You already knew that it’s possible to transfer SPG (Starwood Preferred Guest) points to Marriott at a rate of 1 to 3, but did you know that the same is possible with Choice?  This is another one of those Rube Goldberg approaches to miles & points, but this one actually works. When Marriott bought Starwood and let loose 1 to 3 point conversions, all kinds of great things happened.  Suddenly, top tier Marriott properties (45K…

As reported by You Have Been Upgraded, Oneworld has some fantastic business class prices from Dublin to North America — from $1339 round trip through some OTAs from Dublin to New York. Flights are available to places as far as Honolulu (and other Hawaiian islands) from $1992. Cheap prices are available to many other cities also — YHBU reports other low fares to Miami, Las Vegas, and San Francisco — many other cities are likely available. Here, I have also included…

Is the Andaz 5th Ave overrated?

I recently spent a weekend at the Andaz 5th Ave in New York City. I was excited about this stay; not only had I read the many positive reviews of this hotel over the years, but the location of the hotel near Bryant Park and the New York Public Library hold a significance for me. I proposed to my wife on the steps of the library because it has long been a holiday tradition of ours…

Secret Flying is reporting some great airfares on Air Canada between Los Angeles / San Francisco and Sydney, Australia: from $678 round trip from both cities in August and September. I have since discovered that Vancouver to Sydney is available from $697 USD, and Toronto to Sydney is available for just $702 round trip. Fares around $900 are available from Washington DC, Cleveland, and Pittsburgh and possibly a number of other US cities. These prices are available via…

Should I go for the 30% transfer bonus to Virgin? Reader input requested.

The Amex Membership Rewards 30% transfer bonus to Virgin Atlantic ends Monday, May 22.  I’m tempted to take advantage of it, for several reasons: Virgin Atlantic miles are extremely valuable towards ANA first class flights. Virgin Atlantic miles can be quite valuable towards Delta flights. Virgin Atlantic miles can be valuable for Virgin Atlantic awards and upgrades if you don’t mind dealing with high fuel surcharges. Necker Island.  I want to go back.  See:  Is…

Altitude Reserve flight search better than expected but far from perfect

The new US Bank Altitude Reserve card offers very good first year value thanks to its 50K signup bonus and $325 in travel credits (the card currently shows up in the #20 spot on our Top 10+ Credit Card Offers page)  The best use of the card’s points, in my opinion, is to redeem them for flights at a value of 1.5 cents per point. The problem is that you have to book your flights…
