How to avoid United Basic Economy

avoid United Basic Economy

Avoid United Basic Economy In the time since I published “How to avoid basic economy when paying with points,” United rolled out their Basic Economy product to virtually all domestic routes.  And, it turns out that United Basic Economy is the worst.  They offer no advanced seat assignments, no ability to upgrade, no same day changes or refunds, no overhead carry-ons, and no elite qualifying earnings. And, just to really make your life miserable, if you…

10% off Uber + 5X

PayPal Digital Gifts is offering 10% off on Uber gift cards in $25, $50, and $100 denominations. Additionally, PayPal Digital Gifts has been known to code at 5X on Chase Ink cards (though YMMV). Direct Link to Promotion If you often use Uber, this can be a great way to save a few  bucks. There is a limit of one per purchase, but you can likely purchase several. I’m not aware of a maximum, but purchases…

WOW Airlines is out with a great sale on flights from various cities in the US to Europe with prices from $89.99 one-way from many cities for summer travel in July/August. How to book Delta One Suite saver awards

Delta One Suite

A few days ago I booked three Delta One Suites on Delta’s new A350 aircraft to fly nonstop from Tokyo to Detroit.  Each ticket cost 80,000 SkyMiles plus about $40 in fees (¥4460 JPY).  If you’ve been following the excitement about Delta’s new product, you probably know that the best published rate appears to be 160,000 miles one-way.  Luckily, there’s a simple way to snag saver level 80K awards… Delta One Suite Delta recently announced…

Free Virgin Mobile + Virgin Atlantic / Alaska discounts: Deal or no deal?

Free Virgin Mobile cell service for one year

On the heels of Sprint’s recent (and still valid until 6/30) promotion for one year of FREE Sprint cell phone service, Virgin Mobile announced a few days ago that they are also offering nearly free wireless service for 12 months, as well as opportunities for 2-for-1 travel on Virgin Atlantic and up to 20% off some Alaska Airlines flights. However, there is a catch….or two or three or four. The main catch is that you have…

Update: Delta Europe deal dying, but bookable through some OTAs

Late last night we published a huge Delta airfare sale to Europe from both hubs and smaller markets around the country. This morning, that sale is dying. Google Flights is still showing low prices, but they are no longer bookable at those prices through Google Flights. However, many city pairs are still available through small Online Travel Agencies (OTAs) listed on Momondo.com. I know next to nothing about these smaller OTAs and can’t guarantee a smooth booking process. However,…

We have stumbled on a huge airfare sale from many Delta hubs and smaller cities to Europe from $538 round trip nonstop for summer travel, with many one-stop itineraries also available. Some example deals follow (click the images to go to Google Flights). All of these examples are for summer travel in July…

Hyatt Credit Card changing: better or worse?

As you may have heard yesterday, the sign up bonus on the Hyatt Credit Card is set to change. Beginning a week from today (June 29, 2017), the sign up bonus will change from the long-standard two free nights after $2,000 spend in the first three months to 40,000 Hyatt points (presumably after the same amount of spend). The Change Current sign-up bonus: 2 free nights at any Hyatt hotel in the world after spending $2,000 in the first…

Delta first class: great companion ticket deal (glitch?)

Delta First Class Dining

I stumbled upon something surprising the other day.  Thanks to my Delta Reserve companion ticket, I was able to book two people into domestic first class for less than the price of a single economy ticket. Holiday High Prices Most years we visit family in southern Florida after Christmas.  And this year we thought we would book our trip very early rather than waiting until prices skyrocket later on.  But, it turned out that prices…
