Some hot deals around the ‘net

As today is Amazon Prime Day, retailers from A to Z are doing their best to steal your attention away (see what I did there?). Here is a collection of some of the deals — both on Amazon and around the web — going on today. Note that I have not done extensive research on these, they were just deals that caught my eye and I thought readers may find useful. Most of these came from watching Slickdeals…

Fast-track to A-list [Targeted?]

I received an interesting email today from Southwest Airlines with what I assume is a targeted offer for double points and fast-tracked A-List status. If you’re looking for A-List status, keep an eye on your email — this offer is pretty good! The Deal 2X points on flights you book and complete between June 19th, 2017 and September 30, 2017 You can also earn A-List status through 2017 or 2018 based on first registering and then booking and completing the…

Bet You Didn’t Know: Sears Shutdown, RadPad Issues, and Southwest Standby

By Julian, author of Devil’s Advocate…   Normally the “Bet You Didn’t Know” series is focused on tips and tricks rather than news, but there have been several recent items of interest that I’ve seen only lightly covered across the blogosphere, or in some cases not at all. And since these are important tidbits that points and miles collectors should know about, we’re going to switch it up a bit this week. Call it a “Breaking News”…

Strange, but true: New Southwest points are worth more BEFORE you get the Companion Pass

Companion Pass Meter

Argument Overview In this post, I argue the following: The redemption value of Southwest Rapid Rewards points, relative to cash, is the same with or without the Companion Pass.  This point hinges on the fact that the Companion Pass allows you to add a companion for free regardless of whether you pay with points or cash. When working towards a Companion Pass, it can be worth “paying” more for qualifying points than you should pay…

Six ways to secure a Southwest Companion Pass without flying

If you want to be free to fly around the country (and slightly beyond), with a friend, the best deal around is the Southwest Companion Pass.  The deal is simple: earn 110,000 Southwest points in one calendar year and you’ll get a Companion Pass valid for the rest of that year and all of the next year.  While the Companion Pass is valid, it can be used an unlimited number of times.  Simply book a…

The Rube Goldberg approach to buying miles and delivering flowers [Update: ShopRunner not stacking with promos]

Rube Goldberg buying miles and delivering flowers

UPDATE 1:20 PM ET, 1/28/16: It turns out that ShopRunner free deliver does not stack with mile-earning promo codes.  I’m sorry for this mix up!  I will publish an updated post shortly. UPDATE 2;30 PM ET, 1/28/16: I’ve updated this post to indicate which deals require investing in Celebrations Passport ($29.99 per year). I can’t help myself.  Every now and then a bunch of deals come together in a wonderful, but ridiculously complicated way.  And,…

National Park Tour: Hoover Dam

Here it is. Our fantastic trip west to visit four national parks and the Hoover Dam… Amtrak Wolverine to Chicago Nine of us (across two families) began our trip west in business class on Amtrak’s Wolverine line, from Ann Arbor to Chicago.  The four and a half hour trip was pleasant and uneventful. Business class is slightly roomier than coach and includes complementary newspapers and a free non alcoholic drink per person. In Chicago, our…
