(EXPIRED) $100 Southwest gift card for $90

PayPal Digital Gifts is offering a $100 Southwest airlines gift card for $90 today. This is directly via PPDG (not via eBay), and you can only check out with one per order (though you can place multiple orders). Unfortunately, PPDG purchases no longer code at 5x on Ink Plus / Ink Cash cards. Still, this is a good way to save 10%.

The Deal

Key Terms

  • Keep in mind that a Southwest gift card is not valid for the purchase of Southwest Airlines Vacation Packages, cargo, hotel, rental car, Southwest Airlines merchandise, Southwest Airlines group tickets, EarlyBird Check-In, oversized and excess baggage fees, upgraded boarding at the airport, Pet Fare, unaccompanied minor service charge, additional Southwest gift cards, or inflight purchases

Quick Thoughts

I think it’s nice to pick up discounted Southwest Airlines gift cards now and then as it’s usually tough to secure a discount on paid airfare. While it’s a bummer that these gift cards no longer earn 5x, you can continue to receive regular rewards — and a Citi AT&T Access More card may still earn 3x (I haven’t tested this recently). I generally prefer to book Southwest flights with points when possible as bookings made with a gift card or credit card are refunded as a travel credit good for one year from the date of booking. Furthermore, when paying 100% with gift cards, you’re likely giving up credit card travel protections. Points just go back into the account and some cards will cover you with travel insurance benefits if you’ve paid in part (i.e. the taxes) with your credit card. That said, gift cards can be useful when you’re not particularly concerned about those protections and/or you don’t have points in your Southwest account.
