Update 11/17/19: This deal is back for another week and so expires on November 23, 2019.

~

Office Max / Office Depot are once again offering $15 off on $300+ in Visa Gift Cards. That’s a nice way to pick up negative-cost gift cards for some free and easy points.

Visa Gift Card

The Deal

  • Get an instant $15 off when you buy $300 or more in Visa Gift Cards at Office Max / Office Depot from 10/20/19 to 10/26/19

Key Terms

  • Limit of 1 discount per household (YMMV on enforcement)

Quick Thoughts

To get yourself the best deal, you’ll want to buy two $200 Visa Gift Cards. Here’s how the math works out on that:

$413.90 (2 x $200 Visa Gift Card + $6.95 activation fee for each)
 – 15.00 (Instant discount)
$398.90 for two $200 cards plus 1,994.5 Ultimate Rewards points

As you can see, you’ll come out just over a buck ahead (enough to cover the MO fee) and pick up nearly two thousand points in the process. That’s a solid deal.

The terms indicate that it’s one per household, but YMMV in terms of potentially being able to do multiple transactions / visits. At the very list, you should be able to visit more than one store.

I wonder what the marketing plan for OM/OD is here. These discounted VCG sales have been coming pretty close together. There is obviously no profit for it in giving $1.10 payback + whatever merchant fees they have to pay VISA.

I’m guessing that some people that buy these cards don’t use them all the way up and that Blackhawk is running the promotion in an effort to get more people to buy these and not use them all the way up.

Can I buy just the gift card with Chase ink cash or do should I add something else to the purchase?

works on the variables too.

So do I just go to the store and use one of my Chase cc and I will get 5X?

Patty
Guest
Patty

No, you have to use a card that specifically earns 5x at office supply stores.

So Chase Sapphire and Freedom Unlimited don’t qualify?

Vanson
Guest
Vanson

Correct. Chase Sapphire and Freedom Unlimited will just earn at their respective rates. 1UR for CSR, and 1.5UR for CFU.

If I am allowed to buy more than 400 in gift cards in one visit, can I buy $800 with one purchase to get the discount,($15 X 2) or do I need to do separate purchases (400 X 2) to get the $15 off?

george
Guest

No, You have to do it in 2 separate transactions $400 each to get $15 off each time.

I load VGC’s from Staples and Office Depot onto my GoBank account. Totally free at WMT and you can do it directly without going the money order route. Just don’t make the mistake of letting the cashier see that it is a gift card. Tell them you are using a DEBIT card, which they are.

Ed, did you buy the GoBank Visa card at WM directly and then setup your account online? I’ve been using BB and MO to unload these. Thx.

Yes.
You want the one available at WMT to get the free loads. It’s a Mastercard debit card. Buy it and open the account at the register with a minimal amount.

Don’t you have to pay a monthly fee of $8.95 for the GoBank account? Or are you getting that waived by having direct deposit setup?

Ed. C

Yes, there is an $8.95 monthly fee that is waived if you direct deposit $500 per month. That’s easy to circumvent if you are creative and, like me, don’t have any income you can have direct deposited.

I am not seeing this deal in the ad currently, is this just advertised in store? Want to be sure before I head out, thanks!

Please don’t buy these gift cards without telling them how frequently they get hacked! I bought 5 gift cards, all $500 and 2 out of 5 cards were hacked. It happened the end of August. They were hacked sometime between the time I bought then And my 7 minute drive home. I just got reimbursed this past Tuesday. It took over 70 days! The amount of paperwork was crazy. I had to provide copies of the card front and back, my bank statements, the register receipt, addresses of the Vons I bought it at, the names of everyone I spoke with. DO NOT BUY BLACKHAWK NETWORK gift cards.

Office Supply Stores do NOT sell $500 value gift cards. Your issues are the crooks that compromise the gift cards, not something BlackHawk can prevent, especially for those hanging at the grocery stores.

Besides this is not any news that gift cards are often being hacked. Not just your $500 cash equivalent card but a $50 Shell gift card too. So much so the local grocery chain does not question anything when you bring the hacked Shell gift card together with the package and receipt, they just replace your card, while file claim with the issuer. I saw this happened at customer service counter last week. A local friend went thru the same process last month.

If you want fool proof way, DONT buy gift cards. Period.

So I have bought these in the past using a chase ink, then I switched to using Amex simply cash which Pays 5x, I normally liquidate them by paying eBay fees and I’m wondering if that’s a waste because I know Ebay fees used to pay 5x for ink, anybody know if amex simply cash does too? I’ve got a lot of charges and I’ll be damned if I can figure out what’s paying 5x and what’s not.

Still a good option for using ink and liquidating them.

Can you please explain “liquidate by paying eBay fees”? Thanks

My local OD let me buy 8 today. I’ll probably do that 2x more times this week.

Thanks for the tip! Last time they had this promo, I picked up GroceryEverywhere Visa cards as well as the regular Visa cards. The GroceryEverywhere have lower fees and worked just fine for the discount. I easily spend them organically in a couple of weeks, effectively getting 5x UR points on groceries.

How do you buy visa gift cards with credit cards? My local OD/OMs won’t allow purchasing visa or mastercard gift cards with credit cards, only debt cards. I am in greater Chicago area.

miafll

Because the stores allow it.

You should know this thing is extremely localized. Even in the same town, within 5 miles distance, one store can sell as many as you feel comfortable while the other store is cash or debit only. This happens in my town. Even at same store, some cashier would only allows one transaction and other cashiers do not care at all.

Nothing is more YMMV than MS.

Thank you Nick and Miafil for your replies. I took your suggestion and went to another OD a bit further from my place and sure enough they were happy to take my credit card for GC purchase 🙂 . Thanks again for taking the time to response to my question.
