Europe on sale: Late summer and early fall as low as $226 RT

Update: Added Detroit to Paris from $384

As reported by Secret Flying, there are some great prices on airfares to Europe in late summer and early fall on a variety of low-cost and legacy airlines from a number of US cities with prices as low as $226 round trip. While that low price is on low-cost-carrier Norwegian, there are a number of deals on legacy carriers starting from $300 round trio out of Boston and the mid $300’s out of Cleveland, with late summer airfare from those cities, Detroit and Washington DC to Europe under $400.

Boston

Boston to Oslo from $226 RT (Norwegian)

This one comes out cheaper if you book on the Norwegian version of the site and book in Norwegian Krone. You’ll want to use a card that doesn’t charge a foreign transaction fee. You could translate the site into English using built-in tools in your browser if you’d like. As you can see, the total price about is 1,898 NOK. Google says that’s about $226 based on today’s exchange rates:

Even if you don’t intend to spend your entire time in Oslo, this could be a great starting point as it is cheap and easy to get around Europe. You could also consider flying just one-way to Oslo on Norwegian and then flying back one-way in business class on TAP Portugal for less than $600. A stopover in Lisbon on the way is free.

Boston to Barcelona from $301 (Air Canada / Star Alliance)

I wrote last week about my hesitation with TravelMerry, but if you’re willing to accept the potential risk, you can save a good chunk of change over booking direct. The dates above are in October, but there are dates in August (19-30 shown below) for just $327 RT:

Madrid is available for just a bit more. It’s $345 round trip from Momondo or just $368 via Google Flights on Swiss Airlines.

There are many other options out of Boston. A search with Google Flights for round trip flights from Boston to Europe for a week in August brings back results under $400 round trip to Paris, Stockholm (on Icelandair — free stopover in Iceland), Rome, Madrid, and Barcelona. If you’re willing to travel in September, you can add London and Berlin to that list.

Cleveland

Cleveland to Brussels from $344

Cleveland has some great prices to a number of European cities. Cleveland to Brussels can be booked on Air France / KLM as low as $344 (August 28-Sept 5 shown)

Or, if you’d rather book with Delta, you can find plenty of availability from $378, even a bit earlier in August (August 16-24 shown)

Cleveland to Zurich and Frankfurt are also available for less than $450 round trip on Delta in August. Those are solid prices for summertime travel from a smaller market city.

Washington, DC

Washington DC to Paris from $381

Washington to Paris can be flown on Icelandair for just $381 RT from late August into the fall (August 22-29 shown)

You can theoretically build a stopover in Iceland on the way for just a bit more in tax. This may be easier to do in September — I don’t necessarily recommend these dates, but this illustrates that it can be done for just a little but more — here it is for $400 total:

Washington to Brussels from $378

Washington to Brussels can be had as low as $378 round trip on Delta starting in late August, though there is a long layover at JFK Air France is just a few bucks more (August 22-29 shown).

Detroit

Detroit to Paris for $384 from September to March except during Christmas/New Year’s

Final Thoughts

These are some very good prices for late summer travel to Europe in many cases before the school year begins. See Secret Flying for some more routes and dates or head over to Google Flights and play with dates. Once you find low prices on Google Flights, you could feed the dates into Momondo and then decide whether or not the additional savings warrants booking through a lesser-known entity. If you find any other good city pairs, let us know in the comments.
