Free stuff and the conversion game

0

Are you looking for some free stuff? You’re in luck — we’ve got some giveaways coming up and you’ve only missed one gave-away so far this week. Greg and I will be at FTU next weekend with some stuff to give away — and congrats to the lucky ready who won the free nights Greg gave away this week. In between all that, this week at Frequent Miler we brought you some free advice on how to play the convert/cancel/downgrade game that’s on the horizon with Amex. Read on for the recap.

Playing the Hilton Amex to Amex Conversion

You’ve got an Amex Hilton card. New cards are coming. What should you do with your current card — keep it? Cancel it? Downgrade it? In this post, Greg weighs the pros and cons of each course of action and breaks it down into actionable recommendations for most situations.

Playing the Hilton Citi to Amex Conversion

Citi Hilton Reserve

I’m mostly disappointed in myself for not product changing my Citi Hilton Reserve while I had the chance. Now, I’m stuck between a couple of options I don’t love: cancelling the card or picking up a new account that will likely count against 5/24 without getting much to show for it. That said, I might hold mine through the transition. I also have a Surpass. If I keep both open through the transition and end up with two Ascend cards, I wonder if I can spend $15K on each and get 2 free nights — plus the points on that spend. I definitely plan to go for the Aspire card, but I’m still weighing the options on how to play the conversion. If you’re in the same boat, check out part 2 of playing the conversion game — from Citi to Amex.

Most months, we publish a month-in-review post at the end of the month for those who don’t read daily. This fall, we ran a seasonal review. If you’ve missed some time on the blog or just want a quick jaunt down memory lane, check out Fall 2017 in review.

Club Carlson for Business Ending. So I gave away two free nights.

Not to be confused with the Club Carlson Business Visa (which is not ending), Club Carlson has (soon to be had) a separate points program for business travelers accumulates in a separate balance from one’s personal Club Carlson account. Greg had some points in this program that were expiring. Since he couldn’t use them and couldn’t donate them to charity, he offered to give them up to a lucky reader. Congrats to Maxim and thanks to everyone who entered!

FTU Expo (free entry and free swag) and the FTU Signature manufactured spend corner

Whether you’re an old dog looking to learn some new tricks or you’re just getting into this miles & points world and feel like a fish out of water, the FTU Expo and Signature events offer something for everyone. Greg and I will be in Chicago for FTU next weekend. We look forward to speaking at both events and together with friend-of-Frequent Miler Shane, we will be hosting an all-day Frequent Miler lounge at the Expo where you can pop in, say hi, and talk miles and points.

That’s it for this week at Frequent Miler. Check back soon for our week in review around the web and this week’s last chance deals.
