Chase to launch new Aer Lingus credit card

In addition to yesterday’s surprise launch of the Chase Iberia Visa Signature card (See: Chase launches Iberia Visa w/ 75K total signup bonus), Chase has announced that they will also be issuing a new Chase Aer Lingus Visa Signature card this spring.

Reported key card details:

  • Earn 3x on Aer Lingus, Iberia, British Airways, LEVEL and OpenSkies
  • Earn 1x everywhere else
  • Free economy class companion ticket after $30,000 spend in a calendar year
  • Priority boarding on flights to and from the U.S.
  • No foreign transaction fees
  • Auto rental collision damage waiver
  • $95 annual fee

Quick Thoughts

This new card will carry nearlty identical benefits to the Iberia card with one big exception: instead of the $1,000 discount voucher offered by the Iberia card after $30K in purchases, the Aer Lingus card will offer a companion ticket good in economy class-only. That may be more or less valuable to you depending on where you live, though with the cheap economy class deals often available to Europe out of major cities these days, it’s likely that the value of the companion certificate will be less than $1,000. Still, if you’re not going to redeem the Iberia discount voucher for premium economy or business class or you are located in a city where Aer Lingus is more convenient, the big spend bonus on this one may appeal more to you.

Either way, it could be a good way to pick up yet another Avios signup bonus. The British Airways Visa Signature card is not subject to 5/24 and early reports indicate that the Iberia Visa Signature isn’t either, so it seems reasonable to guess that the Aer Lingus card may not be either. Assuming the Aer Lingus card offers the same kind of signup bonus, the three cards will make it possible to amass a huge pile of Avios (as it is at least theoretically possible to combine Avios across all three programs as noted here on the Aer Lingus site) — though it will require a lot of spend.
