Quick Thoughts

It’s good to see American Airlines offering promotions like this, even if the bonus isn’t overly compelling. Having said that, register for this offer anyway so that you don’t leave any points on the table, even if you only complete one challenge.

It’s unlikely to be worth booking a hotel, rental car or flight simply for these bonus points. However, if you happen to already be doing all those three, it’d be worth also buying something cheap through the shopping portal and grabbing a coffee at a cafe or restaurant that’s part of AAdvantage Dining to earn an additional 4,000 bonus miles.

You earn 1 mile per dollar spent when booking a hotel through American Airlines’ portal, but keep an eye out for properties offering bonus miles. The bonuses apparently go as high as 10,000 miles, but I’ve never seen that amount. The bonus miles could help mitigate the lack of status benefits or elite night credits for booking through the portal rather than directly with the hotel. If you don’t hold status with the hotel chain though, that won’t really matter.

You have until September 30 to complete the tasks, so that gives three months over the summer to work on them.

I think for many of us it will come down to whether it’s worth 2,500 AA miles to rent a car. Buying and dining are easy, and getting a friend to book a hotel shouldn’t be too hard if you’re not already staying. Flights are iffy; I happen need one so no problem, and many AAA members obviously fly a decent amount especially in summer. But a car…
