Flixbus is running a promotion with bus travel available across California for $0.99 + a $2 service fee ($2.99 each way all-in). Bus travel isn’t for everyone, but at these prices it might be worth checking out if you’re looking to get around California on the cheap.

The Deal

  • $2.99 each way bus fare within the state of California on Flixbus for travel from August 8 – September 5, 2018
  • Direct link to Flixbus

Key Terms

  • Book through 8/9/18

Quick Thoughts

Sure, bus travel is a lot slower than plane travel. On the flip side, you can watch a bit of the countryside as you travel via bus, and that has always appealed to me. Of course, it’ll likely be via highways and not necessarily glamorous on Flixbus (apparently it is a European company that just set up shop out west a couple of months ago) — but the price is right. As you can see in the screen shot above, buses direct from Los Angeles to Sacramento take about 10 hours and cost $2.99. That even includes a 50lb checked bag and a carry-on.

You can also add an additional piece of checked luggage up to 20kg (presumably 50lbs) for an additional $10. Prices are the same whether you’re looking to travel from Los Angeles to Sacramento or just to Palm Springs…San Diego to San Francisco, Fresno to Sacramento and so on. They don’t only travel the long routes — you could travel from LA to San Diego for three bucks as well.

Scheduling looks very limited — Los Angeles to Sacramento or San Francisco were only operating 2 days per week (with multiple frequencies on those days).

They offer a lot of pixtures of the exterior of the buses on their website, but I didn’t see any of the interior. Buses have Wi-Fi, power outlets, and restrooms. I wouldn’t have high expectations for a luxurious experience, but for $2.99, I’m not sure one can be too picky.

It’s great in Europe with actual nice buses, frequent and timely service. It’s a bit different here in the US – they don’t actually operate the buses – they subcontract to a bunch of good ole US bus companies so you get the same crap service and crap buses. Looking at slickdeals, many report issues with cancelations and buses not showing up at the right places. I would have no reservations if using them in Europe (I did score a £1 ticket on Megabus (similar service) last year, but I’ll pass in the US.

It all depends on your time. It would take longer than flying around if you trying to go long distance. But definitely more flexible.
