American Express Membership Rewards is offering a 25% bonus on transfers to Hawaiian Airlines Hawaiian Miles. This is a niche program, but it may be worth it if you have a good redemption in mind.

The Deal

  • Get a 25% transfer bonus when you transfer American Express Membership Rewards points to Hawaiian Airlines Hawaiian Miles
  • With this bonus, get a transfer ratio of 1,000 Membership Rewards points to 1,250 Hawaiian Airlines miles

Key Details

  • Valid through 10/7/19
  • Must transfer in increments of 1,000 before the bonus

Quick Thoughts

Hawaiian charges 7,500 miles each way for inter-island flights. With the transfer bonus, that’s just 6K Membership Rewards points. Back when inter-island flights were regularly north of $100 each way, I’d have called that a deal. However, with Southwest competing fares down (and offering two free checked bags on the routes they serve), I see less value in inter-island awards now.

However, Hawaiian also offers a few sweet spots. I recently flew Hawaiian Airlines business class from Honolulu to Papeete, French Polynesia en route to Bora Bora. Hawaiian charges 47.5K for saver business on that route, which would be 38K Membership Rewards points with the transfer bonus.

Honolulu to Papeete is only about 5.5 hours, so 38K Membership Rewards points isn’t a screaming deal, but it’s not bad either.

In terms of partner awards, here’s a link to the Hawaiian Airlines page with partner award charts. The page begins by saying that partner awards can only be issued round trip, but the charts go on to detail one-way pricing with some partners. If booking over the phone is anywhere near that intuitive, I’m sure it’ll be at least a mild annoyance. Still, 125K round trip for Virgin Atlantic Upper Class between the North America East Coast and the UK sounds like a pretty good deal, especially since Dan’s Deals says there are no fuel surcharges. That means you’d only need to transfer 100K Membership Rewards points for a round trip award. That sounds pretty good.

Apart from those couple of sweet-ish spots, this bonus probably won’t be very appealing for most people. Still, we’ve added it to our current point transfer bonuses page.

[…] 25% transfer bonus to Hawaiian from Membership Rewards (Expires 10/7/19) […]

David

Do you think it would be a good move to transfer for the purpose of using Hawaiian miles for JetBlue flights? JB transfers to MR 1000 = 800. If JB had a 20% MR transfer bonus, you’d get 1000= 1000. I fly JB more than any other airline.

Based on availibility and the fact that Hawaiian Air raised their award charts with no notice, I wouldn’t do this unless I could find a flight ahead. I recently checked, and the best I found was 65,000 and that was one way in Economy from JFK to Honolulu.
