Picked up a free year w/ the Amex BCP. Otherwise, for where I live and proximity to many competing B&M stores, Amazon Prime is no where close to worth it, even at the $72.

Used to have Amazon for half a decade before cancelling in 2013. Went without it in 2014 and was a great decision. Fact of the matter is their pricing (and taxes) for popular items (w/ Prime qualifying) are more often than not, higher than competitors. For less popular items, their pricing is even higher. There was a recent study that pointed to this fact. At this point Amazon is parallel with ShopRunner; nice to have, but wouldn’t pay for the service (although I’d pay a trivial Amount for Amazon). Sure, for some people Amazon Prime is a great value, but not for most people if they take a hard look at the numbers and logistics.

To use this for a renewal:
Go to ‘manage prime membership’, click thru to ‘end membership’, then click ‘end later’. This will just cancel the auto renew on your current membership.
Then, send yourself a Prime membership as a ‘gift’. At the end of checkout you can set the delivery date, which should be a day or so after your current membership ends.
Worked for me; I’m good until May 2016.
