There’s a new Amex Offer offering 6,000 Membership Rewards when spending $350+ on AmexTravel.com for prepaid hotels. If Nick’s recent prediction was correct, this offer might be triggered by FHR bookings even though they’re excluded, although we don’t know either way yet if that’s the case.

AmexTravel Amex Offer Spend $350 Get 6,000 Membership Rewards

The Deal

  • Spend $350+ for a prepaid hotel booking at AmexTravel.com and get 6,000 Membership Rewards.

Key Terms

  • Expires December 31, 2018.
  • Offer valid only for a prepaid hotel booking at AmexTravel.com.
  • Excludes Fine Hotels & Resorts bookings, Car or Cruise bookings, phone orders, transactions made via online chat or for the flight portion of a flight+hotel package.
  • Valid only on US website.

Quick Thoughts

A return of 6,000 Membership Rewards on $350 is pretty good, although you’d be giving up on status benefits, points, elite night credits, portal cashback, etc. by booking through AmexTravel.com versus booking directly with a hotel chain.

This appears to be a targeted offer as my wife and I had it on all our Membership Rewards-earning cards, whereas Nick only had it on one card. Doctor of Credit also mentioned that there’s a $60 statement credit version of the offer, but the 6,000 Membership Rewards version is more valuable.

American Express recently announced some changes to the Fine Hotels & Resorts program which includes earning 5x Membership Rewards when paying with a Platinum card and prepaying for the reservations (although they can still be cancelled).

When writing about these changes, Nick speculated that the fact that FHR bookings will be prepaid, the payments might be processed by AmexTravel.com. If that’s the case, it might trigger this type of Amex Offer even though the terms specifically exclude FHR bookings. We have zero data points at this point in time as to whether or not this will work, so this is all speculation. However, if you’ll be making a reservation through FHR and will be prepaying for the stay, it might be worth using a card loaded with this offer if you’ll be spending $350+ in case it does trigger the offer.

Does it have to be in 1 charge or can I book two separate $175 bookings?

Jags

Do you know if it is possible to book 2 different hotels under the same transaction? I rarely stay at the same hotel 2 nights in a row. For example next week I’m in a different hotel every night Monday – Friday.

Edward

I wonder if you have a points offer and a cash back offer on different cards for the single merchant, will Amex clawback one of the offers somehow/someday

Trevor

It doesn’t show up on my card unfortunately. In fact, I’ve never seen any points offers on my Rose Gold card. It’s all cash back offers since I got the card. Do you know how I can get these points offers instead of cash?
