FM Mini Review: For Amazon Prime members, this is a great card for Amazon, AWS, and Whole Foods purchases. Note though that Chase and Synchrony offer similar consumer cards.

Overview

5% back for Prime members at Amazon and Whole Foods is interesting considering that Amazon and Whole Foods sell such a wide variety of items.

Note the following terms:

Eligible purchases are purchases of products and services, minus returns and other credits. Buying products and services with your Card, in most cases, will count as an eligible purchase; however, the following types of transactions won't be eligible for the rewards option and won't earn % Back rewards: fees or interest charges payable to American Express, cash advances, purchases of travelers checks, and purchases of other cash-like transactions not made at designated Amazon properties, such as purchases or reloading of prepaid cards, and person-to-person payments. Additional terms and restrictions apply.
You may notice that purchases of prepaid cards are explicitly excluded. It will be interesting to see whether Amex enforces that rule with gift card purchases.

Rewards

This card's rewards depend on whether or not you're an Amazon Prime member and whether you prefer cash back or additional time to pay.

Application Tips

Amex Application Tips

  • Safe to Apply: Amex is the safest bank for trying your luck at a new welcome bonus. They don’t usually issue a hard pull when denying your application. Plus, they’ll now warn you during the application process if you’re not eligible for the bonus.

  • Lifetime Rule: If you've ever had the same card before, you are most likely prohibited from getting a welcome bonus for the card if you sign up now. Fortunately you'll be warned during the application process if this is the case. Amex is known to "forget" that you've had a card after about 7 years.

  • 5/90 Rule: In general, you can get at most one credit card within 5 days and 2 within 90 days. The 5 day limit is not enforced when your applications are automatically approved. Neither rule is enforced for charge cards.

  • 5 credit card max:Amex usually won't approve applications for new credit cards if you already have 5 or more Amex credit cards open. This limit does not apply to charge cards.

  • Better Offers: You may be able to get a better offer than the best available public offer. Details here.

  • Hard inquiries combine into 1 when approved same day

Check application status here.
If denied, call reconsideration: 877-399-3083 (new accountholders); 866-314-0237 (current accountholders)

Keep or Cancel?

Since this card has no annual fee, the only reason I can think of to cancel it is if you need to free up a slot to add another Amex credit card to your portfolio.

Just applied and immediate approval. 5% is fantastic and for a no annual fee card it’s hard to pass up, even for the infrequent Amazon shopper. $125 gift card is good too. Very nice to hold the biz version of the card as the personal versions offer similar benefits.

What Chase card gives 5% back at Amazon? If it’s an UR card I’m signing up immediately.
