As reported by One Mile at a Time, there are some crazy first class fares running right now between South Africa and Spain on British Airways — with round trip flights from either Johannesburg or Cape Town to Barcelona or Madrid from about $873. As these are paid first class fares, they could earn a ton of miles, but I’d hold off on making nonrefundable plans to make sure this gets honored.

The Deal

  • Cheap first class fares between Johannesburg / Cape Town, South Africa and either Barcelona or Madrid, Spain (other options might be available)
  • Check Google Flights for dates (tons of availability at the time of writing through the end of the schedule, excluding Christmas/New Year holidays)the inside of a plane

Quick Thoughts

This likely won’t last long, so I won’t go into much detail here. See the One Mile at a Time post for more detail. This will have limited usefulness for those based in North America, but if you’ve got a trip abroad planned, this could be a nice way to get around and also earn a lot of miles. Credited to Alaska Airlines, I believe these fares will earn at least 450% mileage flown (more with elite status). I believe that would come to around 57,000 miles earned on a round trip from JNB to BCN without any status. Of course, you have plenty of other options for crediting to oneworld airlines that may be attractive. I’d suggest acting fast if you want to book this as it likely will not last.

It’s a shame that non-refundable is a one way street – in the likelihood this is a coding error at the very least if they offered compensation that had breakage like 6 months complementary top tier elite status or an earning bonus multiplier 250x% for 6-12 months on certain full fare bookings.. Generous compensation that is unlikely to be redeemed – but generates goodwill even if not used but still generates revenue. Where as it seems that airlines miss an opportunity to manufacture loyalty and goodwill vs “sorry folk but unfortunately do to unforeseen computer errors……blah blahs blahs blahs, a refund will be issued and we will be crediting you 5,000 miles or sending out a $25 (or even $100 voucher) we apologize for your inconvenience.

I have less issue with the later if it happens in the 1st 6-24 hours.

But it’s amazing how.much loyalty and customer good will is generated on the generous compensation proposals that are a carrot but have single digit redemption percentages – but customer perception and and gained loyalty from offer gets 4.5 stars out of five versus 2 stars or less for $100 voucher even when customer believed it was a computer error and unlikely to honored.
