Business Class: Oneworld Ireland to US from $1300’s RT, Hawaii under $2K RT – Alaska Elite Mileage Run?

As reported by You Have Been Upgraded, Oneworld has some fantastic business class prices from Dublin to North America — from $1339 round trip through some OTAs from Dublin to New York. Flights are available to places as far as Honolulu (and other Hawaiian islands) from $1992. Cheap prices are available to many other cities also — YHBU reports other low fares to Miami, Las Vegas, and San Francisco — many other cities are likely available. Here, I have also included good prices to Boston, Chicago, and Phoenix. One round trip to Hawaii earns almost enough miles for Alaska Airlines MVP status — making these a great run for both redeemable miles and elite status.

Per the far rules, this one must be booked by today — and since this is departing Ireland, I would assume it ends at midnight in Dublin — so that’s 7pm Eastern (or figure your time zone from there). The fare rules state that travel is permitted June 5th-August 22nd or November 23th to November 30th or December 18th to January 4th for the transatlantic flights (of course this is pending availability, but this should help you narrow your search periods).

The lowest prices can be found via Momondo. Some slightly lower prices are showing via Google Flights on the Hawaii route. Some examples – click the text or images for links:

These dates are also shown via Google Flights, but the lowest price flights jump in price once you select departure and return. Note that flights on SkyTeam and Star Alliance are also quite reasonable.

Note that that these lowest fares definitely aren’t bookable via Google Flights, but you may be able to find them somewhere.

If you’re looking for the real star of the show in terms of earning miles, you’ll want to check out dates on this last one. At 16,375 flown miles (according to Great Circle Mapper, flying DUB-ORD-LAX-HNL-LAX-CLT-DUB as in this example), you can earn a nice number of miles depending on which airline you credit to:

Maui is available for the same price, as are Kauai and The Big Island if you fly into Kona (but not Hilo):

What use are these fares if I live in North America?

At these prices, you could pair them with a cheap one-way or award ticket to Europe now and then get yourself a return to Europe further down the line. You could, for example, take an award flight to Europe this summer and fly home on this sale this summer. Then, in December, fly back to Dublin for New Year’s Eve on the “return to Dublin” leg. I bet they know how to throw a party in Dublin for NYE! Then get yourself another miles or cheap one-way back. If you’re already considering a trip to Europe, this could be an inexpensive way to turn it into two trips.

Bottom Line

These are great prices for Oneworld business class. If you can pick up a segment or two on British Airways, you can earn a ton of Alaska miles (at least 250% mileage flown without status — more if you have status and/or depending on fare class). The flights on American don’t earn as large of a bonus with Alaska, but most folks would still be better off crediting to Alaska. If I’m doing the math right, I believe that the round trip to Honolulu above will earn about 500 miles short of MVP status on Alaska — so if you’re interested in Alaska Elite Status, this may not be a bad run at it. Between redeemable miles and elite qualification, it could in fact be quite well worth it. Remember that most online travel agencies should let you cancel within 24 hours for no penalty. Do your due diligence on the OTA you choose – I know nothing about the low-priced agencies listed on Momondo, though with credit card protections and the difference in prices on some routes, I probably wouldn’t hesitate on this one. If the prices were similar, I’d probably stick with a more known entity — I have not checked Priceline/Expedia and the sort — definitely check there as well once you’ve found your dates.

First of all i love your website and your blogs, keep up the good work. I was thinking of getting the Alaska air 75k MVP award for this year and the dublin to jfk roundtrip on BA business class looks like as a good deal. I was wanting to know how many miles will i’ll be getting if i credit this trip to Alaska Air with a basic status.

If I looked it up correctly, you can put in a leg on BA, so that you will receive 250% of flown miles. So the routing would be DUB-MAN-JFK-LHR-DUB which comes to approx. 20k miles without status. If you fly AA only directly it only will be 10k miles.

I suggest you take a look at and and mileage chart on Alaska to calculate this stuff…


I’ve flown Oneworld to Dublin in the past. I would add that if you connect in the UK with a leg on BA it will likely be the Euro Business blocked middle seat config. It’s not the end of the world but it is not awesome for that short part. I would think transit through MAN would be much easier than LHR with the LHR terminal changes, etc. that are so time consuming. The upside to LHR is the BA business class lounge is way nicer.


Just booked an award ticket back from Europe to SF this fall, otherwise I would probably jump on this deal with several months between flights. Thanks for the good work, keeps Frequent Miler as the number one blog I follow.
