Tip: Check Marriott reservations for decreases

Marriott Bonvoy introduced peak and off-peak pricing over the weekend (and we published a post earlier about how you could leverage the current sale on points with off-peak Cat 1 pricing to pick up cheap elite-qualifying nights and a post about using your 50K certificates to book Category 7 hotels at off-peak times). Doctor of Credit posted a good tip earlier today: you should check your reservations for any hotels that have dropped in price.…

Centurion Lounge 3 hour policy doesn’t apply to layovers

In March 2019, Amex added new restrictions for Platinum cardholders accessing Centurion Lounges: You can no longer access the lounge upon arrival at the airport.  Lounge access is only for departing passengers. You can’t access the lounge more than 3 hours before your flight. The restriction against arriving passengers is unquestionably a bummer.  I’ve been known to time my flights into LaGuardia airport so that I can arrive and have lunch at the Centurion Lounge. …

Marriott Bonvoy: Book Cat 7 Off-Peak with 50K Certs

Here’s a sliver of a silver lining for Bonvoy fans… Now that Marriott has implemented their Peak and Off-Peak award pricing, those with 50K free night certificates can book Category 7 hotels when they are priced at off-peak rates.  Previously, 50K certs could only be used for Category 6 hotels and below.  The bad news, of course, is that when Category 6 hotels are Peak priced, we won’t be able to use our 50K certificates…

Chase Freedom Q4 2019 Categories Announced: PayPal, Chase Pay & Department Stores

Chase Freedom Q4 2019

Chase has announced the 5% categories for Q4 2019 and it’s a good selection – PayPal, Chase Pay & department stores will all earn at the 5% rate. Hotels.com Makes A Lame Move, Adds $5 Fee When Redeeming Free Nights

HotelsDotCom $5 Fee

Hotels.com has announced that they’ll be introducing a $5 fee when redeeming free nights earned through their Welcome Rewards program. While it’s good that they’re not dressing it up as an enhancement or as something that customers have been clamoring for, it’s still a lame move considering their “free” nights already aren’t free. In case you’re not familiar with how Hotels.com’s Welcome Rewards program works, for every night you book you get a credit worth…

Chase Adds Emirates Skywards As Transfer Partner

Chase Ultimate Rewards Emirates

One of the best features of Chase Ultimate Rewards is the ability to transfer points to airlines and hotel programs. That list has expanded to 10 airlines as Emirates Skywards has been added as a new transfer partner. I’m not entirely sure when Emirates was added as an Ultimate Rewards transfer partner, but it’s likely to have been either today or in the last couple of days. You can now transfer points on a 1:1…

Citi (apparently) loses transfer partner Garuda Indonesia

In reading blog posts from around the Internet for our week in review around the web post (which publishes later tonight), I came across a post from Milelion (a Singapore-based blog) saying that Citibank had lost Garuda Indonesia as a transfer partner. It isn’t uncommon for banks with a presence in multiple countries to have different transfer partners, so I wasn’t immediately sure whether this would affect US-issued cards. However, after logging in to ThankYou.com,…

Negative Hilton status match changes: No instant Diamond, more nights required

Hilton has today announced changes to its status match program. Unfortunately, the news is not good: effective today, Hilton no longer offers a direct match to Diamond but instead requires you to match to temporary Gold and then meet a minimum number of nights to keep Gold or upgrade to Diamond. While that makes sense from a loyalty perspective, it’s a bummer for those who planned a future match, especially those who had their sights set…
