Marriott’s Annual Devaluation: 120 Fewer Properties For Credit Card Nights

Renaissance Hong Kong Harbour View Hotel

Marriott has announced its annual devaluation and while it’s not as bad as last year’s, it doesn’t make for happy reading if you have any 25,000 or 35,000 point certificates to use from your Marriott and/or SPG credit cards. That’s because there will be 120 fewer properties you can use those certificates at starting from next month. You can find the full list of 2019 category changes here, with those changes going into effect on…

Business class Europe to USA from $400’s one way

Just the other day, we wrote about some fantastic fares on TAP Air Portugal. Today, TAP is running an even better deal, albeit limited to bookings made by Sunday for travel that commences through February 28th (and completes by March 31, 2019): get 50% off all fares. That’s half off on economy class or half off on business class. If you originate in Scandinavia, that can make for some fares from about $420 one-way to Toronto or the higher $400’s…

Comparing Hyatt in Hawaii: Kauai vs Maui

Over the past couple of weeks, I had the chance to enjoy some time in Hawaii, which is truly one of my favorite destinations in the world. I recently said that before I went to Hawaii for the first time years ago, I imagined it to be like a celebrity crush: easy on the eyes, but you’re probably not going to fall in love. Of course, I was wrong and Hawaii turned out to be…

Chicago to Australia from $427 RT on Qantas

There was some terrific airfares available right now from Chicago to select cities in Australia (including to Melbourne, Sydney, and Brisbane) from just $427 round trip. Australia is a long way to travel in economy class if you’re accustomed to using points and miles to fly up front, but these prices are fantastic if you don’t mind traveling in econ (and afford you the additional flexibility of choosing dates/times without being boxed in to award availability). The Deal…

Hilton’s junky new Points Explorer tool isn’t always accurate

Hilton announced a new tool yesterday called “Points Explorer”. See the tool at this link. Since Hilton has variable pricing instead of an award chart, this tool purportedly shows you a range from the fewest number of points necessary to the maximum for any hotel in the portfolio. That could theoretically be helpful since you would know the best “deal” when you see it. Except it doesn’t work. Still, I think it has the potential…

Great business class fares to/from Europe (~$1100 / ~$648)

There is currently good availability to fly in business class from North America to Europe from a little over $1,100 one-way on TAP Air Portugal, with flights back to the US starting as low as the $600’s on TAP. Prices from less than $440 from London to New York on Royal Air Maroc are showing up on Skyscanner, but I haven’t found any dates that are bookable at that price. These are terrific prices for lie-flat business class…
