Earn 50K AAdvantage Miles for Opening a Citigold Checking Account

citigold 50k bonus

Citibank is offering 50,000 AAdvantage miles to select customers who open up a Citigold checking account and meet certain requirements.

Offer Details & Terms

To get the bonus, simply visit the Citi website and input the special offer code 42ERCWNQU6. You must currently hold an AAdvantage Platinum Mastercard to be eligible. This offer expires on December 31, 2015 and requires you to spend $1K on the debit card within 60 days and perform a bill pay within two consecutive months. You can find the full offer terms here.

Note: There is also an offer for 50,000 ThankYou points.

Monthly Fee & Downgrade Options

The Citigold account does carry a $30 monthly fee that is waived the first 2 months. After the miles post you may be able to downgrade to a Basic Banking account where the fee is waived with a simple direct deposit and bill pay. You should also be able to close the account if you wish.

Fund With Credit Card

Citi does let you fund your checking account with a Visa or Mastercard up to $100K. To do so, you must either mail or fax in an authorization form. Doctor of Credit has collected a number of data points regarding which credit cards work without being charged a cash advance fee.

Possible 1099

Citi issues 1099s on accounts with a bonus exceeding $600. It is unclear how they value AAdvantage miles for this purpose. Recent 30K deals haven’t seemed to trigger a 1099, however 50K miles could.

Citi Prestige Cardholders

If you are a holder of the Citi Prestige card, opening a Citigold account should also lower your annual fee by $100 to $350.

It is waived the first 2 months and after the bonus posts you have the option of downgrading or cancelling if you aren’t happy with the account.

Is the fee automatically waived the first 2 months or do you need to request it? And where do I find the form to fax in for credit card initial deposit? Am I able to open account with bonus and credit card deposit in branch? Thank you!

is this targeted only?

Past offers have had the same language, but generally anyone with the cobranded AA card has been able to get the bonus.

“This offer is available to Citi® / AAdvantage® credit cardmembers who receive this communication.” -Citibank T&C
“You must currently hold an AAdvantage Platinum Mastercard to be eligible.” -Shawn Coomer

So which is it? Citibank is saying Citi AAdvanate cards, which I believe would include the Executive, Platinum, and Bronze card (which is a no-annual fee card). But you’re saying only Platinum card holders.

Any data points on the targeted issue?

how do they verify that you have a citi aa card? does it need to be linked to the citi gold account somehow?

Shawn,
Do you think it’s worth it to pay the $30 monthly fee? I got this offer a few days ago, but was hesitant bc of the fee. I’m estimating 3-6 months before they deposit the miles, so $90-$180.

Shawn Coomer - Senior Editor
Member
Shawn Coomer - Senior Editor

Most people report getting the miles in 3-4 months and the 1st two months are free. The last time I got a similar offer I only incurred 1 x $30 monthly fee before the miles posted & I decided to downgrade my account. I do think it is generally worth it personally, but everyone’s situation will be different.

After selecting my State, it says, “We’re sorry, but we’re unable to open this account for you online. But you may open this account by calling 1-800-374-9700.”

Some people have reported success when trying again. Other have said to make sure you are logged out of your Citi account and in private/incognito mode so cookies don’t mess things up.

Hmm… I am in the process of getting that account created with 40K TY point offer… I wonder if they will switch me to this offer instead. 50k AA is worth more to me than 40K TY… but then there is a possibility of 1099

I doubt they will switch, but you can always send a secure message and ask.

Any idea if someone can get this if they already had. Citi Gold checking account in the past? I didn’t notice any mention in the terms.

I recently completed the 30k mile citigold promo and I am thinking about going for this one too. I see no language specifically preventing it but citi is already so hard to deal with when it comes to citigold/aa miles

Shawn Coomer - Senior Editor

Past offers made mention of 24 months, but this one only says you can’t currently be a consumer checking customer. I have heard of people churning these offers, but haven’t done it personally so I couldn’t say.

Will this checking account opening show as a hard inquiry on credit? Will it count toward an application when applying for the Chase Sapphire Preferred credit card that needs under 5?

JoeFly
Guest
JoeFly

Honestly, it’s much easier than they make it seem to get sapphire, they just get a bigger-than-normal promo off you applying so they push it as “the first card you HAVE to get”

I’m sorry, I just know from personal experience that even with average credit, if you understand how the application process works with citi it’s quite easy to get the card

Shawn Coomer - Senior Editor

In the past it has always been a soft inquiry. I don’t believe anything has changed.

I’d be shocked if Citi allows this to go on for that long.

Given that Citi seemed to be cracking down on the previous 30k AA/Citigold offer (see http://www.doctorofcredit.com/citigold-checking-problems-with-the-aa-30k-offer/), I can’t imagine why they’d be happy to give away 50k AA miles.

Matt Vorwald
Guest
Matt Vorwald

Not only are they giving away 50k AA miles, but additionally, as many AA miles as you are able to fund in dollars using your AA credit card. In my case, a total of 65k AA miles for each of my family’s accounts.

Do you have to have the citi advantage PLATINUM card … Or is it any card as the BRONZE?

I just applied. I have a question about what are the options for “Qualifying bill payments”? Utilities and stuff like that? Also, would I be able to transfer the miles to my AA account?

Shawn Coomer - Senior Editor

You will be able to link your AAdvantage account for the miles.I believe any bill pay from the checking account will qualify.

Thanks Shawn.

BTW, it comes with a savings account that needs to be funded with $100. Is this a requisite for the promotion right?

Also, after I applied to this I noticed I could have applied to the other promotion that offers 50000 thankyou points. Do you know if I can apply for that one too? I am assuming the answer is no because I wouldn’t be a new member anymore, but If you have a different version let me know.

My account did not come with a savings account, and the offer makes no mention of one.

I’m fairly certain it is only the primary, however I would contact Citi to make sure.

Where in the terms does it say you must currently hold an AAdvantage Platinum ***MASTERCARD*** to be eligible? I only see “This offer is available to Citi® / AAdvantage® credit cardmembers who receive this communication” in the terms.

Also wondering this. I know I can fund with the AA Executive card, but will my Executive card qualify me for the bonus? It does it have to be a AAdvantage Platinum?? Did you ever find out Nathan?

That is correct since it isn’t issued by Citi.

Its a package. It comes with a savings account that needs to be funded with $100. Is this a requirement for the promotion or can I just ignore it?

When I click the link it asks me which state I’m in. After selecting CA, I get this message: “We’re sorry, but we’re unable to open this account for you online. But you may open this account by calling 1-800-374-9700.” Anyone else having this problem? What am I doing wrong? Thanks for your help!!!

My Chase United has a $20 cash advance limit. Question: What happen if I try to found my new citigold with $10,000? Assuming it goes as CA would it even be approved? Or would it be declined? I know Chase has mixed reviews at Doc of Credit and has post as CA. Anyone willing to help? Shawn?

I just called Citi and tried to open the account with my Citi Prestige World Elite, and they told me there would be a cash advance fee, and nearly all cards make it a cash advance.

I thought perhaps the Citi card would be put through as a charge – but no longer.

FYI

I applied under the AA. As an FYI to everyone they sent the kit which was only the checks. So I called the 800# after 2 weeks and they said I had to request the debit card but could only send me the ATM version now. They said the account had to be open for 30 days before I got the debit card. Has anyone else had this experience?

I got my debit card about a week after opening the Citigold account, and I didn’t have to call in. They just sent it automatically.

Fine print states that your AAdvantage credit card must be open and in good standing at the time the 50k miles are to be deposited. Just be aware…

Emly

I signed up online and was approved right away (Maryland). I filled out the credit card funding form but forgot to fax it in right away. I was reminded when I received the kit in the mail with both checks and the debit card. Didn’t even need to make the initial deposit to get both immediately.

I faxed in the credit card form and funded with 10K from my Citi AAdvantage card. No one called from the Citi banking side or the Citi Credit Card side and the charge went through. It was also coded as a purchase so I will hopefully have another 10K miles added to my account from that!

David

Hey, how did this pan out? Did the 10k count as a purchase on your citi aa card or cash advance? Thanks!

I applied and got approved now i have to spend the 1000, under their terms and conditions i states cash back do not qualify as Citibank Debit Card purchases. if i go to Walmart and make a purchase of 50 and ask for 150 on cash back can the bank tell if i asked for cash back during my purchase?

Hi Shawn,

Do you think it’s ok to make the $1000 debit purchase requirement via gift cards? Or do you think this needs to be actual merchandise purchases to qualify?

Thanks and Happy Holidays
