Earn 50K AAdvantage or 40K ThankYou Points for Opening a Citi Checking Account

citigold 50K

Citibank is offering 50,000 AAdvantage miles or 40,000 ThankYou points to select customers who open up a Citigold checking account and meet certain requirements.

Offer Details

50K AAdvantage Points Offer

Earn 50K AAdvantage miles after opening a Citigold checking account, making $1,000 in debit card purchases and making one or more bill payments in two consecutive months. Expires March 31, 2016 (Note: You must hold a Citi AAdvantage earning credit card to be eligible.)

40K ThankYou Points Offer

Earn 40K ThankYou points after opening a Citigold checking account and making one or more bill payments in two consecutive months. Expires March 31, 2016. (Note: You must hold a Citi ThankYou earning credit card to be eligible.)

Opening the Account

There are two ways to open up the account. You can open it online by clicking here or you can call 1-800-374-9500 and open over the phone. By opening over the phone you should be able to confirm your eligibility for the bonus. Either way, here are the codes you will need for the respective offers:

  • 50K AAdvantage code: WD3QFS2Y4C
  • 40K ThankYou code: 4368UUP5L4

Opening a Citigold account isn’t always straightforward. For more information on opening an account online, see: Citigold Checking Application Process – Step By Step Walkthrough

Other Need to Knows

  • The Citigold account does carry a $30 monthly fee that is waived the first 2 months. After the miles post you may be able to downgrade to a Basic Banking account where the fee is waived with a simple direct deposit and bill pay. You should also be able to close the account if you wish.
  • Citi does let you fund your checking account with a Visa or Mastercard up to $100K. To do so, you must either mail or fax in an authorization form. Doctor of Credit has collected a number of data points regarding which credit cards work without being charged a cash advance fee.
  • Citi issues 1099s on accounts with a bonus exceeding $600. It is unclear how they value AAdvantage miles for this purpose. Recent 30K deals haven’t seemed to trigger a 1099, however 50K miles could.
  • If you are a holder of the Citi Prestige card, opening a Citigold account should also lower your annual fee by $100 to $350.

So the big question, can we churn this? Opened a Citigold in June 2015 and downgraded to Basic

Have you received a 1099 for the account you opened in June?

Yes. My wife and I have both received similar bonuses a couple of times.

Can authorized users open an account or only main account holder

I believe only primary cardholders are eligible. I suggest calling to confirm your eligibility.

Do you have to receive a targeted offer?

Does any Citi Aadvantage credit card, as the Bronze quality you?

In the past the Bronze card has worked, but the only way to know if you are eligible for sure is to call Citi.

Just called. I wasn’t targeted. She said you would get a mailed promotion otherwise even if you opened account you wouldn’t get the miles. Sort of a waste of time.

Is there any reason why buying MO’s at a grocery store wouldn’t quality for the debit card spend?

Nope it probably would. What I did was send Citi a secure message after completing a transaction just to make sure it counted so there weren’t any surprises.

Hi,
I have one question here:
Is it possible to use Plastiq or other similar services to reach the $1000 spending?
It would seem like it is not possible but would be great if somebody can confirm or knows any alternative way.

On their website in the T&C page (https://online.citi.com/JRSAO/ao_online/editAccountSummaryPromoPopup.do?PromoCode=WD3QFS2Y4C) they state:

Qualifying bill payments are those made using Citibank® Online, Citi Mobile® or CitiPhone Banking®. Bills paid by making a transfer between linked accounts and/or transfer payments made to accounts within Citibank or to accounts with Citibank affiliates do not qualify as bill payments for this offer.

The $1,000 in spending are debit purchases. The bill pay mentioned is something else. I believe Plastiq would trigger it, but haven’t heard any data points so I cannot confirm.

But then again — does this application counted in the same basked as CC apps? I had 2 CC apps this month — so should I wait or should I go?

It is a soft pull. There are too many unique variables for each person, but I can tell you I opened my account last year following more than two credit card apps.

I think I screwed up. I opened account online, but I don’t have AA credit card. Should I quickly apply for a credit card now or is it too late?

It probably is too late, but you can always call. Also, if you fund with a credit card, it may still make opening the account worthwhile.

I’ve seen several reports now on the pages reporting on this about people calling in and being told that they don’t qualify as they weren’t targeted. Any word on people’s experience with this? I’m not sure whether to call and check or just apply online using the code and see what happens. Has anyone done one of those and ended up not getting the bonus?

I have seen it happen both ways. Yes people have been told they don’t qualify and have received the bonus, but it isn’t guaranteed and some people have been told no. I would personally go with what Citi says or just fund with a credit card and enjoy those rewards with the thought that the actual sign-up bonus is just gravy.

I already have a citi checking account. If I close mine and open a citigold, am I eligible for this offer?

You may be, but I cannot tell you what Citi will say. I can say that if you currently have an account then you are definitely not eligible until it is closed. Closing it doesn’t guarantee anything though.

Not working even in incognito mode. The actual promo ended Dec. 31, so if this is a new one and real then it is highly targeted.

After receiving a mailed targeted offer, I applied online last month and was denied an account. I thought I had answered all of the identity verification questions correctly.

Two days ago, I received another targeted offer via email. Do you think I should try again online or over the phone? Do I have a better chance over the phone?

I would definitely do it over the phone just to be safe and to ensure the promotion is applied correctly.

Data point: I already had the citi gold just recently with the 30k aadvantage offer (even though I was not targeted). So I wanted my husband to take advantage of this one. He’s never had a citi gold checking account and he does have a citi platinum aadvantage credit card. He called the number in this post and the lady, though nice, said the offer was targeted and he had to follow the instructions in the email or letter he got. I am not really sure whether he was targeted or not as he has not been looking out for the offer. I was a bit discouraged by that but we still went into his citi.com account and decided to give it a try and open a citi gold checking account after being logged into his account. We entered the promo code in the main page as we were opening the account, and saw an attachment that referred to the promotion being available. So I saved it to the desktop for future reference. We finished opening the account, including deferring the funding to a credit card, and when the process was finished there was that link again that said “promotional offer”, I clicked on it and this offer was there, associated with the account!

Data point – Just signed up for the account using the code for 50,000 AAdvantage miles. There was a Promotion Disclosure link on the left side of the screen as I was opening the account, and when I clicked on it, it confirmed the promotion (saved it as PDF for future reference). Chatted with an agent right after I opened the account and he confirmed that the offer was attached as well (saved this too). Will be funding my account with my brand new AAdvantage card. The weird thing is, when I tried to set the cash advance to $0, the rep told me the lowest he could go was $750?

Do you recommend maxing out my Citi AAdvantage card when funding this account to get the most points possible? Is there any downside to maxing out the credit card?

I also tried to lower my cash advance limit to $0, but the lowest they would let me go is $750.

I’ve already got the Citigold checking account with the 40k TY promotion. Can I also do the AA promotion? Two checking accounts?

Shawn,
Few updates:
1. Citi does issue 1099’s only if the payout is in cash. If you redeem over $600 in reward points on a AA flight this does not trigger a 1099. Same if you are issued 50k AA miles Citi does not issue a valuation of dollars/mile to trigger a 1099.

2. Citi credit crds supposedly as of February 9 have stopped being eligible for MS funding.
Can you verify this or provide a workaround to FUND with Citi CC when enrolling in CG Checking account promotion.

Thanks

Shawn Coomer - Senior Editor

There is no workaround unfortunately. As of now it seems accounts cannot be funded with credit cards at all.

I just called and opened a Citigold account. When I tried to fund with my credit card, the rep told me that he can’t process it due to the system issue. They are trying to fix it. Does anyone experience the same situation as me?
Another question. How do you receive 50K AAdvantage miles? After I hanged up, I realized that I didn’t give the rep my aadvantage number during the application process. Did I miss something?

You need to have an AAdvantage credit card to be eligible. They get your AAdvantage number from the credit card.

Just called Citi and was told this was a targeted offer an I’m not eligible. Anybody have luck applying online anyways with the AA promo code and still getting miles?

When I start the application process the code gets accepted & the disclosure statement pops up with the promo spelled out. Would hate to waste time and $1000 opportunity cost to find out I’m still not valid.

I never called, just applied online. Took lots of screenshots as I was applying and sent a Secure Message once my account was open to confirm that the offer was attached to my account. I also did the same after I completed the requirements. I suggest you do the same. If they can’t confirm that the offer is attached via secure message you can just cancel the account.

I recently completed the TY points Citigold promotion. Started in August, didn’t get the points to post until March 1st! It took 8 phone calls and several chats. Several times I confirmed the promotion (though each time I called they asked for the promotion again, odd?) and was told the points would post and they didn’t. The first 5 months I wasn’t charged $30 and then the last 2 months I was.
