A previously unanswered question has been what happens to existing cardholders with respect to the annual fee and the 2X gas benefit?  We now have the answers direct from Amex…

Current Premier Rewards Gold cardholders keep 2X Gas for a full year

New cardholders will earn only 1X rewards at gas stations, but existing cardholders will continue to earn 2X at US gas stations until October 4, 2019.

This was the info provided by Amex:

Additionally, with these changes, the current 2X Membership Rewards points on spend at U.S. Gas Stations earn will be no longer be offered on the Gold Card. Current Premier Rewards Gold Card Members will continue to receive this benefit until October 4, 2019, when this benefit will be discontinued.

Current Premier Rewards Gold cardholders keep $195 annual fee at least until April 1 2019

New cardholders will be charged the new $250 annual fee right away.  Current cardholders will keep the old $195 annual fee at least until April 1 2019.  If your account renewal date is between now and April 1 2019, then you’ll be charged $195 to renew.  If your renewal date is April 1 or later, you’ll then be charged the new $250 rate.  Congratulations to those with March renewal dates!

This was the info provided by Amex:

The new Gold Card now has an annual fee of $250, up from the Premier Reward Gold Card’s previous fee of $195. The new fee will go into effect for current Premier Rewards Gold Card Members beginning April 1, 2019 on their account renewal date.
