Update: I visited an Office Depot store this afternoon and the terms are different to those previously listed online. The offer started today rather than this coming Wednesday, while there’s a limit of $25 back in rewards rather than $75.

Office Depot and Office Max are launching (or perhaps have launched) a decent deal on Happy gift cards, offering $25 back in rewards when buying $100 of Happy gift cards. The terms are a little unclear as to when the promotion starts and if a coupon is required, so it might be worth waiting until Wednesday to purchase these.

Office Depot Happy 02.16.20

The Deal

  • Must present Office Depot OfficeMax Rewards Member# to cashier in store at time of purchase.
  • No rain checks.
  • Offer valid on Happy Gift Cards.
  • Limit $75 $25 in rewards per member.
  • Must meet $100 minimum spend in any combinations of Happy cards.

Quick Thoughts

As mentioned above, the terms for this promotion are a little unclear. Gift card deals at Office Depot and Office Max usually run from a Sunday to Saturday. In this instance though, the start date is listed as being February 19 which is this coming Wednesday. I suspect that someone fat-fingered the date and that it’s supposed to say February 16, but it’s probably better to wait until Wednesday to purchase these in case Wednesday is actually when it starts.

Another confusing aspect of the offer is whether or not you need a coupon to earn the rewards. The description of the offer halfway down the page we’ve linked to above mentions that you need to provide a coupon. There’s no coupon listed on the page though, nor a link to a PDF to print one off. The terms for the offer at the bottom of the page don’t mention needing any kind of coupon, so one probably isn’t needed seeing as past offers like this haven’t required one either. Having said that, if the promotion doesn’t start until Wednesday, Office Depot might not upload the coupon until then.

My best guess is that the promotion starts today (Sunday) and that a coupon isn’t required, but can’t offer any guarantee. The problem with this type of promo is that because it’s offering rewards rather than an instant discount, if you bought the cards today there’s no way of knowing if you’ll earn rewards or not. If anyone goes into an Office Depot or Office Max store today and sees a flyer for this offer, please let us know in the comments below what dates are listed on there.

As for the promotion itself, it’s a pretty good offer. $25 back in rewards on $100 of Happy gift cards is a great return compared to other Happy gift card deals, although that’ll also depend on how you value Office Depot rewards. I used to do a lot of ink cartridge recycling with Office Depot which earned me quite a few rewards each month; I sometimes had a hard time finding good value when redeeming the rewards, so bear that in mind.

The limit of $75 back in rewards means you’ll max this out when buying $300 of Happy gift cards. You can make the deal even better by paying with a card earning more at office supply stores such as the Chase Ink Plus (no longer available for applications) and Ink Cash cards.

Email me if you ever have trouble. There are always TONS of options to get a good deal on burning your OM/OD Rewards. No problem.

None of those battery deals are “free” after rebate. A better way to look at them is – you get 2 packs of AA (or AAA) batteries PLUS 3 6-packs of bounty paper towels for $32 plus tax.

Similar for this one. You get a happy card plus some toilet paper or bottles of water for $100.

So one thing to keep in mind if they have the Happy Cards with SpaFinder can be a good way to get salon haircuts. A lot of hair salons in their network. You can’t earn Rakuten but if you wait for a SpaFinder sale can save additional. This is especially nice when you consider how much coloring costs.

Just a warning – no ‘happy guy” or ‘happy student’ cards at either OD that I went to. Just the 4 types shown in the picture above. I couldn’t figure out how I’d use $300 worth of any of those in stock in the near future, so I passed.
