For a limited time, Alaska Airlines is offering bonus elite qualifying miles with credit card spend: Earn 2,500 elite qualifying miles for each $5K spent on purchases from June 1st through September 30th (up to 10K bonus elite qualifying miles per cardholder). They are also adding a restaurant category bonus as shown below.
The Deal
- Alaska Airlines is offering the following bonuses for credit card spend:
- Earn 2,500 elite qualifying miles for each $5K spent on purchases from June 1st through September 30th
- 2 miles per dollar spent at restaurants and on take-out and delivery from June 1st to July 31, 2020 on up to $1500 in spend
- Additionally, Alaska is offering 50% bonus elite qualifying miles on flights taken through the end of the year (this offer launched a couple of months ago and has now been extended through the end of the year)

Quick Thoughts
Given the cap here, you probably won’t be able to earn Alaska elite status from spend only, though it could get you halfway to MVP status. I’m not totally confident that you couldn’t earn status through spend alone because the terms state that you can earn up to 10K elite qualifying miles per cardholder. It isn’t immediately clear whether one could be counted separately as a business cardholder and as a personal Visa cardholder. My initial guess is that Alaska wouldn’t award more than 10K elite qualifying miles per member — but then I’m not sure why it says up to a max of 10K elite qualifying miles per cardholder rather than per Mileage Plan member. At any rate, my bet is that it’s a max of 10K elite qualifying miles per member, so you’ll be capped at $20K spend for 10K elite qualifying miles.
Keep in mind of course that Alaska previously extended elite status, so if you already have elite status you would not need to worry about earning elite qualifying miles this year. They will not roll over.

Hi Nick, My wife applied for the AK personal credit card through BofA with 40k bonus after $2000 spend in 3 months. She was approved on July 9. Last week we received a mailer with a better offer of 65k (40k after $2000 spend in 3 months, plus add’l 25k after spending an add’l $6000 within 6 months, for a total of $8000 spend). I called BofA to see if they would match the offer, and the agent said no. Any suggestions on how I might get them to match the offer for her? Thanks!

Hi Nick – Good article on an interesting promo. The fine print confirms that each Mileage Plan member is capped at 10k EQMs. Here’s the language from the fine print:
“One individual can only earn a maximum of 10,000 elite-qualifying miles via this campaign, even if they hold multiple Alaska Airlines consumer and small business Visa cards.”
Nick, one correction to your article. All EQM’s as of April 30, 2020 WILL roll over to 2021 EQM to give a higher start for all Mileage Plan Members
