Quick Thoughts

In this “Promo Awards Special Edition”, Flying Blue is offering travel within Europe for as few as 3,000 miles each way and some decent deals in long-haul economy, including Chicago or Washington Dulles to Europe for just 12,500 miles each way (plus surcharges).

Availability on those routes is decent depending on your European destination. Here’s Chicago to Budapest in October:

Note the 88.63 EUR in taxes & fees. That varies a bit based on your itinerary and might make this deal questionable depending on cash fares for your dates / routes. We often see fall fare sales to destinations in Europe in the $250-$350 range round trip on low-cost carriers / basic economy fares out of the northeastern US, so if you’d need to position to Chicago or Washington for this deal, it might be worth checking out cash fares from other cities to which you could alternatively position.

However, there are certainly circumstances where this might make sense. For example, if you’re looking to fly open-jaw (flying to one city on the outbound and out of another on  the return), you might be able to snag a better deal with separate one-ways in a sale like this.  Thankfully, it’s very easy to put together the miles for a flight since Flying Blue is an Amex transfer partner, Chase transfer partner, Citi transfer partner, and Capital One transfer partner.

Also keep in mind that Flying Blue maintains its liberal definition of “Europe” to include both Morocco and Israel. Here’s Chicago to Tel Aviv in November:

In terms of long-haul deals to other destinations, Flying Blue is offering business class to/from Panama City, Panama for 40K miles each way, economy class from Europe to Abu Dhabi for 11K miles each way, and a number of other routes that likely make the most sense for those based in Europe.

Overall, these special promo awards could be a deal at just 12,500 miles each way from Chicago or Washington Dulles, but be sure to compare against cash options.
