Free National Executive Elite status for Amex cardholders + free day after 1 rental

National is offering free Executive Elite status to American Express card members. That’s the level above the Executive status that comes as a benefit of the Platinum Card (and Business Platinum card), so this is a pretty awesome upgrade. Furthermore, if you rent one time and pay with your Amex, you’ll earn 5 rental credits — enough for 1 free day. With Executive Elite status, that’s a great deal, too.

The Deal

  • Get National Executive Elite status, either enrolling as a new member or upgrading your existing membership
  • Direct link to enroll / upgrade (click the button that says “Executive Elite Enrollment” and you’ll have the option to sign up or sign in)

Key Terms

  • Offer valid for new members only enrolled via this promotion between 9/16/18-1/31/19.
  • Get five Emerald Club Credits you can use toward a future rental day after you enroll in the Emerald Club at nationalcar.com/offer/axee between 9/16/18-1/31/19, rent one time from National and pay with any American Express Card.
  • Rental day offer is valid at participating National Car Rental locations in the U.S., Canada, Australia, Latin America, Caribbean, and in Europe, for National Car Rental brand reservations serviced by Enterprise. The five Emerald Club Credits you can use for a rental day are applicable toward the base rate but do not include taxes, government charges, surcharges, concession recoupment fees, fuel and other optional items, which are the responsibility of the renter.
  • Emerald Club points will be credited 24-72 hours after a paid rental.
  • For Executive Elite members, the rental can be used for any available car class, excluding trucks.
  • The rental day expires 12/31 of the calendar year following the year in which the credits were earned.
  • Executive Elite status is valid through 2/28/20. (To maintain Executive Elite status, member must meet the standard qualifications of 25 or more rentals or 85 or more rental days during the full calendar year 2019).
  • See promotion page for full terms

Quick Thoughts

This is a quick, easy, and awesome upgrade. I love National Executive status since it enables you to rent a mid-size vehicle and then choose from the Executive Aisle when you arrive. I’ve even had locations ask me what I’d like and find it on the lot for me when it isn’t in the Executive Aisle. When traveling with family, this has come in handy more than once — I’ve been able to rent a mid-size and reliably get an SUV on arrival.

Executive Elite status gives you access to an even better aisle in some locations, and on free days you can reserve any available car class, excluding trucks. That’s great since the promo also offers enough credits for 1 free rental day after you book a rental and pay for it with an American Express. Remember that you’ll be sacrificing Primary CDW coverage that you could get when paying with other cards (or you’ll need to opt in to CDW coverage through Amex that you’ll need to pay for). That said, the free rental day, especially if you were to use it for a more expensive car class, could certainly be worth it.

Greg just went ahead and did this upgrade. He had National Executive status courtesy of a Platinum card:

But with this promo, he was able to upgrade that status to Executive Elite.

Even if you’re not sure you’d use it, this is worth signing up for since it is valid for all of 2019 and up to the end of February 2020. You never know when it may come in handy. Furthermore, you can likely leverage it into elite status with other companies thanks to a status match. See StatusMatcher.com for options. Dan’s Deals notes that you can match to Hertz by emailing a picture of your National status to hertzstatusmatch@hertz.com.

So I just upgraded and it indicates “*Your membership is valid for the remainder of the year you qualify, plus 14 months.”. If you wait until January 2019 to upgrade, would you get until Feb. 2021 instead of Feb. 2020?

Slightly OT: AMEX doesn’t offer CDW; one has to “opt in to CDW coverage through Amex that you’ll need to pay for.” Is it a good idea to opt-in for “just in case” since it doesn’t cost anything until one uses AMEX for car rental? The plan is to use a card with primary coverage but if said card is not present or doesn’t work, at least there is a backup.

Thanks for the link. With using Uber so much lately, it is difficult to qualify for the EE status. However, it is so nice to have EE status when traveling with family!

Anyone knows if Hertz status match is once per lifetime?
Also, is Hertz status match through end of the year or end of the following year?

I am currently Exec Elite but won’t requalify for 2019. I just filled out the submission, since I am already EE will it still renew me as EE until Feb 2020? There is no where to see/verify the expiration date that I can find.

I am also an EE and won’t be able to ‘maintain’ for 2019. I think our best play would be to apply for this offer the first week of JAN (assuming current EE status ends 1JAN19) and test the ‘upgrade current membership theory”. If that fails…then maybe canceling current account and then then apply for a new one will trigger this offer. It’s worth a try!

nick or any folks, if booking a mid-size thru autoslash ( for lower rate), will it still be possible to have access to the emerald aisle at the counter on pick-up date? has this worked for anyone before? or we need to book directly with national? TIA

Yes. When booking with a 3rd party via a prepaid rate you can still pickup the car in the emerald aisle (or executive aisle in this case) and give them your National Club number when you exit. Sometimes autoslash offers post-paid rates where you can add your National Club number from the get-go.

Great offer! Quick question, to take advantage of the 5 credits after one rental, would you need to use the AMEX EE contract or can I use my corporate contract and just pay with an amex card. Thanks!

My question too, no answer yet?

Any idea if Enterprise rentals will count as the rental? Terms say rent from National but Enterprise is part of Emerald Club as well…

i would doubt it. all promos through national exclude earning through enterprise, i.e. 1-2-free.

I am going to Tampa for Christmas and rental prices seems to be very high. I am planning to rent a car for local used by spending around $50 and use the free rental day for another rental pickup in TPA and drop in JAX. Do you think it is a good idea with promotion

Just a quick tip for anyone wondering: I wasn’t sure if the first bullet under Key Terms (“Offer valid for new members only enrolled via this promotion between 9/16/18-1/31/19.”) meant you had to be signing up for Emerald Club for the first time. This was sort of already explained with the user screenshot submission, but you do not have to be a brand new member. I was lowest tier and just did it and am now EE. Thanks a bunch!

I completed all the steps, enrolled in the program back in Sept and my profile even changed to “AMEX EE” and went ahead and rented. My receipt says AMEXEE on it. BUT I didn’t get any credit (let alone 5). I called National 2 weeks ago and no one seemed to know about the program, even though I gave them the URL to their own page describing it. Now 2 weeks later, still no credit. I called in again and same story, no one knows about it. However, if you click the links above you get a message now that the program is no longer available. At least this time I did get a ticket number from the agent which he said he would be sending to the loyalty department. I’ll give it another week and see what happens. As a side note, I’m not sure why National would cancel this program; it had to be generating money for them. The rates with this code were double the standard rates and almost triple other corporate rates I have access to.
