Free points from Staples until July 22

Staples’ FAR is back!

Finally!  Staples is back with a new FAR (Free after Rebate) software download!  This is a great way to make progress toward meeting credit card minimum spend thresholds or just to earn a few points for buying software you don’t really need or want.  Of course, if you do want the software, the deal is even better!

The idea here is to go through the Ultimate Rewards Mall to Staples.com. Once there, buy up to 10 copies of this “Free After Rebate” downloadable software product for $15 each. You will get 4 or 5 points per dollar from the Ultimate Rewards Mall and another 5 points per dollar if you pay with your Chase Ink card, or another 1 point per dollar if you pay with a standard point earning credit card. This means that can earn between 750 and 1500 free points. See Preparing for Miles for more info about the Ink and other cards.

Staples has an amazingly easy “Easy Rebate” system. Once you purchase the software, they send you a rebate link via email. You click the link, fill out a little bit of info and you’re done. Note that you will have to wait a while, though. It takes 4 to 6 weeks to receive your check.

If you have questions, please see the Q&A section at the bottom of this post.

Here are the steps to follow:

Step 1: Go to Staples via a shopping portal:

According to HikerT’s website, the Chase Freedom card currently offers 5X for Staples whereas other Chase cards offer 4X.  If you have the Freedom card, log into that account.  If you have the Sapphire Preferred, log into that one (for the 7% annual dividend).  Even if you plan to pay with a different card, you can maximize points earned by logging into the mall with the card that has the highest payout for Staples.

If you don’t have any Ultimate Rewards cards, you can go to TopCashBack instead.  This should get you 5.5% cash back.  $8.25 in free money!

Step 2: Add up to ten copies of “Trend Micro Titanium Antivirus + 2012 (1-User) [Download]” to your cart:

TIP: Search for item 368658

image

Step 3: Check out

TIP 1: If you have a Chase Ink card that gives 5X for office supplies, use it!

TIP 2
: Your state may charge sales tax. If you know someone in a state that doesn’t charge sales tax for downloadable internet orders (CA, NH, etc.), then set their address as the delivery address and no tax will be charged. This is a download only purchase anyway, so nothing will really be delivered. I picked “deliver to store” and picked a store in New Hampshire. Of course, there won’t really be anything to pick up.

Step 4: Submit Easy Rebates

You will receive an email from Staples with a link in it for submitting the rebate form. It’s easy!

TIP 1: Even though you bought 10 copies, you only have to fill out one rebate form. Note that it can take 4 to 6 weeks (or longer) to get your rebate.

TIP 2: The software rebate can be changed from a Visa gift card to a check! See screen shots:

Q&A:

Same Item

  • Q: In the past I’ve bought the exact same item for the rebate.  Can I do this again?

  • A: Yes.  As long as the rebate number is different from your past purchases, you should qualify for a new rebate.  This rebate is different from any I’ve posted about in the past.

Per Household Limit

  • Q: How do you know that we can buy 10? I don’t see that restriction anywhere
  • A: See “Can I really buy 10” for a walkthrough of how to find that information.

Per Household Limit, Question 2

  • Q: Can I buy 10 copies for every friend I know?
  • A: I don’t recommend it. I know at least one person who tried to buy two sets of 10 that way, but Staples did not approve the second set of rebates. I don’t know how they figured it out.

Status = Researching

  • Q: The status of my order says “researching”. What’s up with that?
  • A: Staples needs to verify your order. Sometimes this happens if you have the wrong email address or phone number on file. Simply give them a call or do an online chat with them to verify the information they need. Once that is done, they’ll confirm the order.

Promotional Items

  • Q: The Staples’ Terms and Conditions in the Ultimate Rewards Mall says that promotional items are excluded. Aren’t these free after rebate items “promotional”?
  • A: I’ve done this many times now, and my Ultimate Rewards points posted as pending within a week each time. So, either these items are not considered promotional, or Staples doesn’t enforce that restriction.

Do I have to use a Chase credit card?

  • Q: If I go through the Ultimate Rewards Mall to Staples, do I have to pay with a Chase credit card in order to get bonus points from the mall?
  • A: No, you can use any credit card. For details and information about risks involved please see Ultimate Question.

Number of Rebate Forms

  • Q: I bought 10 copies of the software. Does that mean I have to fill out the rebate form 10 times.
  • A: Nope. If you buy multiple copies of a single item in one transaction, you only need to fill out the rebate form once. Really. I promise.

Rebate Time

  • Q: How long will it take for my rebate to arrive?
  • A: The Staples web site says to expect 4 to 6 weeks. My first rebates arrived after about 5 weeks so it looks like Staples’ estimate is fairly accurate.

Number of Checks

  • Q: I bought 10 copies of the software. Will I receive 10 small checks or one big check?
  • A: One big check.

Download

  • Q: Do I have to download this software so that I can qualify for the rebate?
  • A: No! I didn’t download any of the software I’ve bought in the past, but all rebates processed successfully.

Do Good

  • Q: I don’t need this software. Is there someone I can send the license keys to that could make good use of this stuff?
  • A: Check with your local schools or libraries. If someone can make good use of this software, then great!
Chase's 5/24 Rule: With most Chase credit cards, Chase will not approve your application if you have opened 5 or more cards with any bank in the past 24 months.

To determine your 5/24 status, see: 3 Easy Ways to Count Your 5/24 Status. An even easier option is to track all of your cards for free with Travel Freely.
Chase 5/24 semantics ("Subject to" vs. "Count towards"): Most Chase cards are subject to the 5/24 rule. That means the rule is enforced in making approval decisions. In other words, you probably won't get approved if your credit report shows that you opened 5 or more cards in the past 24 months. Meanwhile, most business cards (such as those from Chase, Amex, Barclaycard, BOA, Citi, US Bank, and Wells Fargo) are not reported on your personal credit report. These cards do not count towards 5/24.

Example: Chase Ink Business Preferred is subject to 5/24, so you likely won't get approved if over 5/24. If you do get approved, it won't count towards 5/24 since it won't appear as an account on your credit report.
Amex 5 credit card limit: If you apply for a new Amex credit card, you may get turned down if you already have 5 or more Amex credit cards. Both personal and business cards are counted towards this limit. Charge cards, though, are not counted. You can apparently get as many charge cards as you’d like, and the number of charge cards you have does not affect your ability to get up to 5 credit cards. Authorized user cards are also not counted towards the 5 credit card limit. See also: Which Amex Cards are Charge Cards vs. Credit Cards?
Applying for Business Credit Cards

Yes, you have a business: In order to sign up for a business credit card, you must have a business. That said, it's common for people to have businesses without realizing it. If you sell items at a yard sale, or on eBay, for example, then you have a business. Similar examples include: consulting, writing (e.g. blog authorship, planning your first novel, etc.), handyman services, owning rental property, renting on airbnb, driving for Uber or Lyft, etc. In any of these cases, your business is considered a Sole Proprietorship unless you form a corporation of some sort.

When you apply for a business credit card as a sole proprietor, you can use your own name as your business name, use your own address and phone as the business' address and phone, and your social security number as the business' Tax ID / EIN. Alternatively, you can get a proper Tax ID / EIN from the IRS for free, in about a minute, through this website.

Is it OK to use business cards for personal expenses? Legally, it's fine. And, anecdotally, almost everyone I know uses business cards for personal expenses. That said, the terms in most business card applications state that you should use the card only for business use. Also, some consumer credit card protections do not apply to business cards. My advice: don't use the card for personal expenses if you're not comfortable doing so.
Chase Ultimate Rewards points are super valuable and super flexible. At the most basic level, points can be redeemed for cash or merchandise, but you'll only get one cent per point value that way. A better option is to use points for travel. When points are used to book travel through the Ultimate Rewards portal, points are worth 1.25 cents each with premium cards (Sapphire Preferred or Ink Business Preferred, for example) or 1.5 cents each with the ultra-premium Sapphire Reserve card. Another great option is to transfer points from a premium or ultra-premium card to an airline or hotel program when high value awards are available (see this post for details). If your points are tied to a no-fee "cash back" Ultimate Rewards card, then first move those points to a premium or ultra-premium card before redeeming them in order to get better value.
Amex Membership Rewards points can be incredibly valuable if you know how to use them. In general, if you use Membership Rewards points to pay for merchandise or travel, you won't get good value from your points. One exception is with the Business Platinum card where you'll get a 35% point rebate when using points to book certain flights. This gives you approximately 1.5 cents per point value, which is pretty good. If you don't have the Business Platinum card, then your best bet is to transfer points to airline miles in order to book high value awards. More details can be found here: Amex Transfer Partners.
Marriott Rewards points can be redeemed for free night awards, travel packages, airline miles, or experiences. 5th Night Free Awards: When redeeming points for free nights, the 5th night within a single reservation is free. Airline miles: Points can be converted to airline miles at a rate of 3 points to 1 mile. A bonus is added on when you transfer 60,000 points at a time, such that 60,000 points transfers to 25,000 miles. Also, you'll get a 10% bonus when transferring points to United Airlines.
Editor’s Note: This guest post was written by the same guy who showed you how to fly round trip to Africa (DC to Senegal) for 50,000 points, how to book business class to Europe for 80,000 miles roundtrip, and more. Amex Application Tips

  • Safe to Apply: Amex is the safest bank for trying your luck at a new welcome bonus. They don’t usually issue a hard pull when denying your application. Plus, they’ll now warn you during the application process if you’re not eligible for the bonus.

  • Lifetime Rule: If you've ever had the same card before, you are most likely prohibited from getting a welcome bonus for the card if you sign up now. Fortunately you'll be warned during the application process if this is the case. Amex is known to "forget" that you've had a card after about 7 years.

  • 5/90 Rule: In general, you can get at most one credit card within 5 days and 2 within 90 days. The 5 day limit is not enforced when your applications are automatically approved. Neither rule is enforced for charge cards.

  • 5 credit card max:Amex usually won't approve applications for new credit cards if you already have 5 or more Amex credit cards open. This limit does not apply to charge cards.

  • Better Offers: You may be able to get a better offer than the best available public offer. Details here.

  • Hard inquiries combine into 1 when approved same day

If denied, call reconsideration: 877-399-3083 (new accountholders); 866-314-0237 (current accountholders)

Chase Application Tips

  • Shut-Down Caution: Signing up for new Chase cards can lead to Chase reviewing your accounts. This may lead to Chase shutting down all of your accounts if you appear to be a credit risk. See this post for details and recommendations: Why Chase shutdowns have increased and how to avoid them.

  • 5/24 Rule: With most Chase cards, you won't get approved if your credit report shows 5 or more cards opened in the past 24 months. Details here.

  • 24/48 Month Rule: With most Chase cards, you can get the same card and bonus again 24 months after having received the bonus as long as you no longer have the card open. With Sapphire cards, you must wait 48 months. No wait is required for Chase Ink cards.

  • 30 Day Rule: It is tough to get approved for more than 2 Chase cards within 30 days

  • Get Same Card Again: You can get the same exact card and again if you first cancel the older card and follow the 24/48 month rule. Ink cards are OK to get again without cancelling previous card if you apply with a new business.

  • Better Offers: You may be able to get a better offer than the best available public offer. Details here.

  • Hard inquiries combine into 1 when approved same day (not always true when mixing business and personal)

Caution: Plastiq has announced a temporary change to the way Visa credit cards are handled:
  1. Payments using personal Visa cards issued by Chase will be subject to a lower limit of 20% of your credit limit.
  2. Payments using personal Visa cards from other issuers (other than Capital One) will code as a cash advance. That means you’d incur cash advance fees and wouldn’t earn any credit card rewards.
  3. The following types of Visa cards are not affected by these changes: Capital One personal Visa cards, Visa business credit cards, Visa corporate, debit and prepaid gift cards.
Full details about Plastiq can be found here: Complete Guide to Plastiq credit card payments.
In order to meet minimum spend requirements, people often look for options to increase spend in ways that result in getting the money back. These techniques are often referred to as "manufacturing spend". American Express has terms in their signup offers that exclude some manufactured spend techniques from counting towards the minimum spend requirements for the welcome bonus. For example, most signup bonuses have terms like this:
Eligible purchases to meet the Threshold Amount of this offer do NOT include fees or interest charges, balance transfers, cash advances, purchase of travelers checks, purchase or reloading of prepaid cards, purchases of gift cards, person-to-person payments, or other cash equivalents.
That said, many techniques for meeting minimum spend are perfectly fine. Here are some techniques that are safe for meeting Amex minimum spend requirements (click each link for more information):

@mithun, I believe IB is 4X (URM) +5X (Office Supplies).

mithun: Log into the UR Mall with your Freedom card, but pay with your Ink Bold. That way you get 5X UR Mall + 5X Ink Bold.

I know the point of this deal is to get points/cashback, but can you use a Staples GC to buy this and still get the rebate check? Would be a great way to turn some cards I have from the Keurig deal into cash! Thanks!

FrequentMiler

Kristen: Staples only allows their gift cards to be used in-store. So, you can go to the store to buy these, but then you’ll probably have to pay sales tax.

rob: You’re fine to do it again.

THEsocalledfan: As I wrote above, I’ve always received points from the UR mall for these.

Simon: No. Only do one set of 10 per household.

Miler,

My only hesitation is the T and C on the UR site that now says:

“Not eligible on promotional items, technology, software, and electronics.”

Thoughts? Experience?

DAN,
If you don’t receive the UR MALL points, you will at least get the full $150 rebate check, so not a big risk?

FrequentMiler

It’s true that the “software” clause seems to be new so we’ll just have to see what happens. My guess is that we’ll still get points. And, as simon said (ha!) there’s really no risk as long as you get the rebate.

Any reason I can’t just go for the cash and take 5% back at uPromise while using the Ink card for another 5X points?

Note: TCB had the following in the T&C:

“This merchant requires you to view these terms.

This merchant requires that you submit validation information to us after you have completed the purchase. This will include information such as order number and the name of the person who has completed the transaction.”

Has anyone had to submit this info before? How do you do it?

If you bought 10 does the easy rebates system automatically submit the rebate for 10 copies or do you have to do 10 submissions. I just don’t see anywhere on my confirmation where it says 10 rebates.
Thanks for everything FrequentMiler!

I have used TCB for Staples several times before. This is the first time I have seen the part where you will have to entry further information after the purchase. Although it doesn’t look like they are asking anything that should mess things up unless you are trying to use more than one name.

Awesome! My first Staples Easy Rebate since inking

My father has an ink bold with me as an additional cardholder. Different numbers, different names, different mailing address, same billing address. Do you think it’s safe for both of us to buy 10 each?

Also I’m debating buying 10 with the ink bold and another 10 with my CSP (“shipped” to a friend’s place)

I’m new to the game and I have a couple questions. (1) I just got a new sapphire preferred card, and I’d like to start working toward the minimum for the bonus. Does the three months start running from the day I got approved or does it go from the day I activate my card? If it goes from the day of approval, is there a way to use the card for this staples offer before it actually arrives? (2) I am going to be moving in about 6 weeks, and I’d be a bit concerned that the rebate check might arrive after I’m gone. Can I request that it be sent to a different address (my parents’ house)? Thanks so much for your help. You’re a luminary.

andy: I believe the clock starts upon approval. I’m not sure if you can use the card before you get it (I doubt it), but you can ask for rush delivery of the card.

You can go to the Post office and alert them about your move so all your mail will be forwarded to the new address. Time starts at card approval at least for me.

Regarding the pop-up screen that I got telling me to submit more info, I sent a support ticket to TCB and got the following response:

“Thanks for getting in touch.

Please could you wait until the transaction tracks on your account, so that you can then enter your validation details by clicking on the magnifying glass that will appear on your account.

Once the transaction tracks, if you need any more help validating this then please feel free to get back to us.”

Hope the transaction tracks soon!

I just got the same e-mail with the processing update. If memory serves me right, this update came a few days earlier than the ones in March-April did. May mean we’ll get the rebate checks a bit sooner!

Thanks again FrequentMiler!

I’ve asked Chase multiple times, and the answer is that the 3 months or 90 days starts from the day you are approved for the card.

I know the Staples App nerfs keep coming, but the 20% Software Coupon could make this a real big MM.

FrequentMiler

Sam_goh: Does the 20% coupon stack with the automatic discount given with this software? I wish I hadn’t already made my purchase…

Michael

@PerryPlatypus: The other day, my three year old daughter told me, “After I go to the bathroom, I’m gonna bust my brother!”

Too much Phineas and Ferb? Nah, not possible.

@Sam_goh, hey, now I feel like I’ve been ripped off by paying “regular” price! 🙂

Anyone get a call and a voice mail from Staples today regarding their order?

FrequentMiler
Guest

Steventravel, Sheryl: Don’t worry, they’re just calling to verify the order and/or your info. Just call back and answer their questions.

Sheryl

Sheryl

Steventravel – I did too. I haven’t called back yet, and was just checking in here to see what the issue might be. She didn’t leave any information in the message, only that they were calling about the order.

Thanks FrequentMiler. You’re right, they’re just confirming my phone number, address, etc. for anti-fraud purposes. Thanks for the heads up 🙂

says the rebate is a $15 visa pre-paid card, not a check. is this new or did people just miss it?

Dima
Guest

Connor – you can still select the check (or Staples gift card) even though it says Visa card, read the post again.

Miler – just wanted to say thanks for simple, step-by-step posts and newsletters! I have been recommending your site over any others out there to everyone interested in starting their travel hacking ‘careers’ due to its simplicity. Keep it up! 🙂

FrequentMiler

Dima: Thanks! And, thanks for answering Connor’s question 🙂

Steve: Interesting. I’m hoping that they’ll come out with a prepaid to rival the Amex prepaid. More options are always good!

I just bet $150 bucks that this will work. Keeping my fingers crossed. Hopefully this is more likely to come through than my 4 business class seats to HKG that I bought on Sunday for 16 miles and $300!

We’re sorry, the following item is out of stock.

How can they be out of stock on downloadable software?

Sam_goh
Guest
Sam_goh

@FM & Michael,

If it’s the same price instore and not download only, yes, the 20% will stack with the discount (there are separate instore/online prices). It may require a manager override.

I bought 2 X 20 previously using the kiosk method. You can ask for a pricematch and see if they’ll stack the coupon in store too but that’s ymmv.

FrequentMiler

Sam_goh: How do you get the rebate if you buy more than 10?

Sam_goh
Guest
Sam_goh

@FM – Combinations of wife + work address. Have to be careful of getting accounts merged if you are not careful.

To me, these FAR deals are great to get Premier status ($1K spend) to leverage the Staples ink recycling program. We get about $120 worth of Staples store credit a month between 3 accounts for $9-12 flipping cartridges from ebay. Will get save up a few months for some free Nexus 7 tablets!

Also, there’s a 15% off SW coupon at the moment. You can try a couple of combinations. (http://reg.e.staples.com/c/s/tagfrm/hBQBQ6fB7SHGCB8rPU1CXgIpSUa/coupon.html?n=8216)

1) If in-store CD version is same price, use 15% off coupon, pay sales tax, use Ink Bold for Amex Open for 5% off.

2) This is probably what the pros do. Kiosk it up for the download version, stacking the Staples App 20% SW coupon and a $10 off $75 coupon along with 5% Ink Bold/Amex Open. Use ink credit to pay and convert store credit to cash.

@Sam_goh: How to use this 15% or 20% coupon online?

jo152
Guest
jo152

If I buy this software in store, I will probably not get the rebate since it’s the same rebate number? I have already bought 10 copies online.

FrequentMiler
Guest

Sam_goh: thanks for the added info. One caveat: Amex Open is only for OfficeMax, not Staples

jo152: Correct. technically you should stop at 10 and you risk not getting the rebates for any additional you buy.

Has anyone had their Ultimate Rewards bonus points from Staples posted to their account summaries yet? Seems like Staples may be holding true to not allotting bonus points on software purchases.

Sam_goh

Sam_goh

@jo152 – has to be in-store unless you have the old kiosk from home webpages cached on your computer. With Staples, coupons can be phone, online, or in-store, or any combination of the above. A kiosk order, in-store, counts as an online order for those pesky online only coupons.

What date did you purchase? I purchased on the 18th, my points haven’t posted. Do you check under UR Earn Activity?

FrequentMiler

Larry: I made my purchase on the 16th. Yes I looked under “Ultimate Rewards Mall & Travel Earnings”

alan

I ordered mine on the 16th, still no bonus points for me. I did not use a Chase card to complete the purchase, though, so I won’t be too upset if I don’t get them. Still get a good $150 towards my minimum spend on my SPG business. 🙂

I guess the free download is over, the cost with rebate $4.99 for item 368658?

FrequentMiler

RZ: You’re right, the FAR deal appears to be dead

alan

The FAR deal was in last week’s ad, there’s a new weekly ad every Sunday. This week there’s a FAR Kaspersky for $11 (398331) but unfortunately the limit is only 1.

The good news is my points have posted to the UR Mall. 540 extra points is nice. 🙂 (I bought one boxed copy in store, so no points for that one.)

It looks like the licenses are selling for about $4 on Ebay

Larry

Digital downloads on EBay are illegal(must have a disc to sell). I know I tried previously and EBay notified me and said if caught again, my account would be eliminated. Some people get away with it but not worth the chance.

Paul

Dang, that’s a crying shame. Wasn’t aware of that fact. Thanks for the heads up!
