Kroger has a couple of digital coupons offering 4x fuel points on gift card purchases – one for dining and entertainment and another for Happy gift cards.
- Digital Coupon 1 – Earn 4x fuel points when purchasing restaurant and movie theater gift cards.
- Digital Coupon 2 – Earn 4x fuel points when purchasing Happy or Choice gift cards.
- Expires October 23, 2018.
- Must load digital coupons to account before purchase.
The terms of the restaurant and movie gift card digital coupon are a little confusing. The Kroger weekly ad mentioned there would be 4x fuel points awarded for restaurant gift card purchases, but it didn’t mention anything about movies or entertainment.
The digital coupon itself says that the promotion is a ‘Dinner & A Movie 4x Event’, with participating brands including dining and movie theater gift cards.
If you then check their partnership with GiftCardMall on their website, it lists the promotion as being for dining and entertainment gift cards. It seems that the entertainment category is quite broad and includes Google Play, iTunes, Groupon and Barnes & Noble, yet Netflix and Hulu are excluded.
We posted earlier today about a restaurant gift deal at Meijer stores. If you have both a Meijer and Kroger store near you and you’re planning on purchasing restaurant gift cards, your best option will depend on the size of your gas tank.
For ease of comparison, let’s say you’re planning on buying $250 of restaurant gift cards. If you bought them at Meijer, you’d get $25 off your next shopping trip – a 10% return.
If you bought them at Kroger, you’d earn 1,000 fuel points which is good for $1 off per gallon on up to 35 gallons. If your gas tank is large enough to fill up with 25+ gallons, you’ll save more by purchasing the gift cards at Kroger than at Meijer. If you can maximize that and fill up with 35 gallons (either with a large tank or filling two separate vehicles), your return would effectively be 14%.
That’s on top of any bonus points you’ll receive from using a card that has grocery stores as a category bonus. I think online gift card purchases from Kroger/GiftCardMall show up as being processed by GiftCardMall, so you’d only earn the bonus points for in-store purchases.
