Quick Thoughts

As mentioned above, even though these digital coupons are available to load to your Kroger account right now, they’re only valid when buying gift cards from Friday to Sunday. If you’re planning on buying a lot of gift cards, it’d be worth waiting until Sunday to buy them. The reason why is because Sunday is March 1 which means that fuel points earned that day will be valid until April 30. Any fuel points earned on Friday or Saturday will expire on March 31 as you’d be earning them in February. That’s not a problem if you’ll easily redeem them all in March, but if you’re buying hundreds or thousands of dollars worth of gift cards (for personal use or to resell), having an extra month to redeem the fuel points could be helpful.

In case you’re not familiar with how Kroger fuel points work, every 100 points are worth $0.10 off per gallon on up to 35 gallons. Most Kroger gas stations limit you to redeeming 1,000 fuel points per fill-up, although some locations (such as Richmond, VA) allow you to redeem more than that. If you can fill your gas tank (or tanks if you take along 2+ vehicles to fill up at the same time) to the 35 gallon limit, you’ll be saving 14% which is a decent return. Don’t forget to pay for the gift cards with a card that earns more at grocery stores to make it even more rewarding; the Discover It and Citi Dividend cards are earning 5% cashback this quarter.

The fixed-value Visa and Mastercard gift cards offer a different value proposition. If you can fill your vehicle(s) with at least 13.5 gallons of gas, you’ll save more in gas costs than you’ll pay in activation fees, although that doesn’t factor in any kind of liquidation costs involved with using them.
