Are you eligible for a new Marriott card?

Marriott cards. If you have or have had one you may not be eligible for others

In our recent debate about whether to recommend a Chase Marriott card or Chase Hyatt card, one of Nick’s arguments in favor of the Marriott card was that you could sign up for that card and an Amex Marriott card in order to get two free nights each year.  I slammed back with the assertion that you would need a Phd. to figure out if you’re eligible for an Amex Marriott card after signing up for the Chase Marriott card.

Even though I was joking (sort-of), it is extremely difficult to understand whether or not you can apply for a new Marriott card if you’ve had one before.  Each card has a slew of rules that determine whether or not you can sign up and whether or not you’re eligible for a Marriott card’s welcome bonus.

What follows is my best attempt to simplify the rules…

First, you’ll have to be under 5/24:

Chase's 5/24 Rule: With most Chase credit cards, Chase will not approve your application if you have opened 5 or more cards with any bank in the past 24 months.

To determine your 5/24 status, see: 3 Easy Ways to Count Your 5/24 Status. The easiest option is to track all of your cards for free with Travel Freely.
