Every month or two, Meijer runs a deal where you can earn $5 rewards on your mPerks account for every $50 you spend on participating gift cards. That offer has returned today which could be helpful if you’re having a hard time meeting minimum spend on a new card at the moment or want to rack up some easy bonused spend at a grocery store.

Unlike a lot of grocery store gift card deals, this Meijer deal doesn’t require that you load a digital coupon. Instead, your mPerks account is automatically registered for the offer, so all you have to do is buy some gift cards.
Due to the nature of the offer, there are a few quirks that are worth being aware of. First, it’s a $5 reward that you earn rather than it being an instant discount. If you max out this offer, you’ll therefore be spending $500 rather than $450. In return, you’ll have 10x $5 rewards loaded to your mPerks account to put towards a future grocery shop.
Speaking of spending $500, you can buy one $500 gift card if you like rather than having to buy 10 separate $50 gift cards. Any kind of combination is fine – 5x $100 gift cards, 2x $250 gift cards, 20x $25 gift cards, etc.
The $5 rewards are loaded to your account within a couple of hours of you buying the gift cards, but they’re sometimes loaded more quickly than that. On the rare occasion I’ve been near a Meijer when this deal has been running, I’ve been able to buy $500 of gift cards when I first arrived, then had the rewards be loaded to my account by the time I reached the checkout after shopping for groceries. If I recall correctly, Meijer sends an email once the rewards are loaded, so that can be helpful as it means you don’t have to walk slowly around the grocery store waiting for the two hours to be up.
When redeeming your rewards, be careful how you use them if you’ll be spending less than their total value. That’s because the value remaining on any partially redeemed reward is forfeited. For example, let’s say you earn $50 in rewards but spend $46.41 on groceries. It’s best to only redeem nine of your $5 rewards in that scenario because if you redeem the tenth, you’d forfeit the remaining $3.59 of rewards. That remaining $5 reward could then be redeemed the next time you shop, although the rewards do expire after a few weeks; I forget how long they remain valid for, but the expiry date will be displayed once they’ve been loaded to your mPerks account.
One of the best features of this offer is that if you have gift cards you want to buy for either personal use or reselling, it’s an easy way to generate $500 of spend on a credit card. It can be hard to meet the minimum spend requirement on a new card right now, so stocking up on discounted gift cards is one way to help meet that spend provided it’s not an Amex. Alternatively, pay with a card that earns more at grocery stores. In addition to the usual best grocery stores cards, the Chase Freedom card is offering 5% at grocery stores this quarter.
If you’re familiar with this type of offer, one thing worth noting is that this deal is only around for a week. Meijer seems to usually give 2-3 weeks to take advantage of the offer, so this has a shorter time limit than you can normally expect.
