Quick Thoughts

As always with these Meijer gift card offers, Amazon gift cards are excluded along with several others. There are a number of other good options though like Best Buy, eBay, Home Depot, etc. which could all be profitable for gift card resellers.

There are several things to note about this offer. The first is that you don’t have to buy ten separate $50 gift cards in order to max out the offer; instead, you can buy one $500 gift card. Alternatively, you could buy $200 for one brand, $150 for another, $100 for another and $50 for a fourth, or any other combination totaling $500.

The second thing to note is that the $5 rewards aren’t loaded to your account immediately, although they normally appear within a couple of hours. If you’re planning a large grocery shop, you could buy the gift cards when you first arrive at the store and the rewards will hopefully be available by the time you reach the checkout with your groceries later on.

A third thing to note is that it’ll ask you if you want to use your rewards when checking out, $5 at a time. If your grocery bill is less than your total rewards, be careful each time you tap yes. If you redeem some rewards and then there’s less than $5 remaining, it’ll allow you to redeem a reward for the remaining amount, but you’ll lose anything extra. For example, if there’s $2.11 left to pay, redeeming a $5 reward for that amount will mean you’ll lose $2.89 of value from the reward.

A fourth thing to consider is which credit card to pay with. Discover It and Citi Dividend cards are offering 5% cashback at grocery stores this quarter. However, Citi Dividend specifically states that Meijer purchases aren’t eligible (my bolding below):

Supermarkets are large retail markets that sell foods and household merchandise. Purchases made at Target, Walmart, Kmart, Meijer*, general merchandise/discount superstores, freezer/meat locker provisioners, dairy product stores, miscellaneous food/convenience stores, markets, drugstores, warehouse clubs, wholesale clubs, specialty vendors, bakeries, candy stores, nut stores, confectionery stores, or meal kit delivery services do not qualify.

I’m not sure if Discover It regards Meijer in the same way. Here’s their wording:

Grocery Store purchases made at convenience stores, gas stations, warehouse clubs, discount stores, supercenters (or at grocery stores associated with supercenters or discount stores), including Walmart and Target are not eligible.

If Discover classes Meijer as a supercenter then you won’t earn 5%, so it’d be worth doing a test purchase beforehand to see how it codes. This offer is available until February 15, so there’s enough time to check this.
