Singapore KrisFlyer is offering an interesting promotion: get 500 miles for each person you refer who opens a Singapore KrisFlyer account and has activity, which looks like it could be relatively easy to meet. While they are advertising that you can earn “up to 31,000 miles”, the reality is that you’re capped at earning up to 10K miles from referrals (the top 3 referrers will get 21K additional bonus miles).

Key Terms
Qualifying activity that must be completed by the new KrisFlyer member in order to earn the referral bonus:
1. Miles accrued or redeemed on flown flights on Singapore Airlines, SilkAir and Scoot
2. Miles accrual from partners.
3. Transfer of points from partner programmes to KrisFlyer
4. Submission of retrospective mileage claims for flown flights
5. KrisShop accrual transactions
6. KrisPay accrual transactions and miles conversions

Quick Thoughts
The terms of this deal are pretty easy: you need to refer someone who signs up using a promo code and your KrisFlyer membership number and then they need to earn or transfer in some miles. Note the bold part of that sentence — you’ll need to give the person who signs up your KrisFlyer member number, so you won’t want to do this with Internet strangers.
On that note, the sign up process is far from intuitive. See this screen shot that is also under “The Deal” above. Neither of these two headings highlighted in Blue are automatically displayed. You need to click the black arrow to the right of the heading to see the field where they need to enter your KrisFlyer membership number. That is a key detail you’ll want to share with anyone you refer. Honestly, it seems like a cheap way to prevent people from getting credit for the promo that just doesn’t match the image the popular image of Singapore Airlines, but nonetheless you’ll just need to make sure whoever you refer is looking out for this.
That said, if you have family members who have never joined Singapore Krisflyer, it should be relatively easy to take advantage of this promotion.
First of all, the terms are pretty clear that miles transferred from partners, which should include credit card programs like Amex Membership Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Citi ThankYou points, Capital One “miles”, or Marriott Bonvoy (as well as other hotels partners) ought to count. If you have family members who may actually want to book an award with Singapore and/or credit their flights to Singapore Krisflyer, that’s great.
On the other hand, it wouldn’t make much sense to transfer 1,000 points to Singapore (the minimum from most programs) just to earn a 500-point referral bonus.
However, qualifying activity point #2 says “Miles accrual from partners”. While they explicitly include KrisShop, which is their online duty-free-like shop, I imagine that earning miles through the KrisFlyer Spree shopping portal could also be qualifying.
Note that most of the payouts via the portal stink, but they have a lot of major US stores once you set your location as USA (find the GPS icon around the “sign in” in the top right corner or so).
I don’t know for certain that miles earned from shopping will trigger the bonus, but if you have some friends / family members who don’t mind making a small purchase through the shopping portal, you might be able to put together some miles from referrals.
While 10,000 miles won’t get you terribly far, it is almost enough to fly to Hawaii on Alaska Airlines from some parts of the US. I wouldn’t set my sights on the 21,000 bonus miles for the top 3 referrers as you’ll stop earning 500 miles per referral after you hit 10K.
Overall, it’s nice to see a chance to earn some miles without flying just for referring friends for a free account.
