Office Depot is offering a $15 instant discount when buying $300 or more in Visa gift cards. With activation fees of $6.95 for $200 cards, this is a profitable deal.

This deal wasn’t listed in their weekly ad (the image above is from a similar deal in the past) but is apparently being advertised in-store.
$200 cards have activation fees of $6.95, so if you buy two you’ll make a profit of $1.10. The deal is made much better if you have a card that earns 5% / 5x at office supply stores as you’d earn an additional $19.95 / 1,995 Ultimate Rewards with a Chase Ink Cash or Ink Plus card respectively.
Depending on your location, your store might sell out of the $200 denomination quickly, so it’d be best to head to an Office Depot / Office Max ASAP if you want to take advantage of the offer.

It seems to be a pattern that Office Max offers this best type of $15 instant discount (completely eliminating the card fees and giving you $1.10 profit) shortly after running a good but far less attractive offer with some real fees to pay. I’m spending these organically because I’m not going to mess with the money order liquidation hassle and my old Serve was shut down years ago. So it’s hard to have invested all I can handle organically and then the best sale comes out just before xmas and I’m tempted to overextend. I wish liquidation was as easy as in the old days.
Went in and bought 2×200 visas…the blue wrapped metabank issued ones…despite the $15 off 300 sign, they did not ring up 15 off. Not sure if it was just that specific sku, but you may want to try variable load or a different packaging option if your office max/depot has it
The discount usually doesn’t come up until the you’re about to put in your card (like after you pick what type of receipt you want). Or did you go ahead and pay it and still didn’t take the 15 off?
