For the past couple of weeks the Rakuten (formerly Ebates) shopping portal has been offering $30 or 3,000 Membership Rewards when referring new members. That offer has been extended, so you now have until May 11 to earn the bonus.

The Deal

  • Refer friends at family to the Rakuten shopping portal and you both earn $30 or 3,000 Membership Rewards when they spend $30+ through the portal.
  • Direct link to offer (Greg’s referral link)

Key Terms

  • Expires May 11, 2020.
  • Notwithstanding anything to the contrary in the Referral Program Terms, this offer is valid only if the referral signs up and completes their qualifying purchase within 90 days.

Quick Thoughts

I think the normal referral bonus for Rakuten is $10, so a tripling of that reward is a great offer. Not only that, but if your account is set up to earn Membership Rewards, you’ll earn 3,000 Membership Rewards rather than $30 which is even more valuable.

The spending requirement for the people you refer is pretty easy too seeing as all they need to do is spend $30 through the portal within 90 days. There’s a good chance that most people you know will be spending at least $30 online within the next three months at eligible retailers, so this offer is a no-brainer if they’ve not used Rakuten before.

While I’d normally recommend that they check Cashback Monitor to ensure they’re getting the best rate first, I can’t imagine they’ll get a better return than $30/3,000 Membership Rewards. Having said that, if they’re a prolific online spender then having them check Cashback Monitor would make sense so that they can earn more at other shopping portals when possible, then using Rakuten for a retailer that only tends to offer 1%/1x (e.g. Best Buy).
