Declined due to 5/24 as well. Called recon line and oddly she cited 3 CCs that are more than 24 months ago (1x February 2014, 2x July 2014). She wouldn’t give me any indication on how long I’d have to wait to apply again. She also indicated it had already been denied and there was no room for reconsideration.

Will have to circle back to this card in 6 months and see what happens then once a couple fall off. Bummer – I do have 4 Chase cards but I’ve never churned any of them (e.g., they are all still open and only 1 was opened in the last 12 months – the rest are 3+ years). The only Chase card I’ve ever shut down was my United card that I ripped up and canceled in a moment of extreme displeasure towards UA back in 2013 at the peak of their post-merger follies.

I also do all my banking with Chase (even though no Chase bank in NC) so I definitely fall in the “loyal” customer bucket.

Have you tried calling recon a second (or even third) time? They don’t always have the same answers when you speak to different people.

The link is on the Best Signup Offers page. Check the last sentence of the post. We keep all application links on that page instead of including them in the body of the post. This helps us ensure everything is up to date.

I found it and applied. Got the pending screen. Called recon and had to answer some questions and shift some credit over, but approved! I am exactly at 5/24, but one is a business card (not sure if that makes a difference).

Good to know on the business card! My husband applied yesterday. He’s at 5/24 but one is a business card. He’s also an AU on one of my cards from past 24 months. We got the pending notice. Hasn’t called recon yet.

… but no mention of the 100,000 points on the “start” page.

The application link has been discovered before discovery of the landing page showing the offer. I’m confident that those approved with this link will either automatically get the 100K bonus upon meeting spend requirements or can easily get matched to the offer by calling or sending a secure message to Chase

Got “7-10 days” message. Way over 5/24. I won’t bother to call.

Went pending immediately, looks like they’re denying on 5/24. Similar data point from a relative. Not sure it’s worth wasting the hard pull for those over 5/24.

Greg The Frequent Miler

If any readers get denied by recon (888-245-0625), please let us know the exact reason given. For example, if they say “too many recent inquiries” that is NOT 5/24. If they say “you have opened 26 accounts in the past 24 months” then that IS 5/24.

When I called not only did the tell me it was due to 24/5 rule but when I asked for more information they hung up on me. Doesn’t make business sense to decline long term uses of the Amex Platinum and citi prestige card

Any reason to wait and see if the 100K does show up as part of the offer? Know you said you’re confident, but just to be safe???

Greg The Frequent Miler

At this point, I don’t think there’s any reason not to wait. Early applicants were hoping to slip in before 5/24 was in place, but it appears that it may already be there.

I mean is anyone here getting immediate denial?

I’m at 6/24, but 2 of those are business cards. On the downside, they’re both Chase (Ink and Ink Cash). On the plus side, they (or at least one of them, the other wasn’t open yet when I got my reports) don’t appear on any of my credit reports. I’m finding conflicting information about whether these should count towards 5/24 or not (some people say Chase counts Ink cards even if they’re not on your reports, others say they don’t).

What would you recommend here? Apply online and take my chances? Or would I have a better chance if I go in person?

If I call for recon, is “yes, I have 6/24, but 2 of them are business cards, so I should really be 4/24” something they will listen to?

Told I have more than five applications in two years and that it is ironclad policy nothing they can do about it. Escalated twice, called back twice, threatened to cancel, no progress whatsoever.

Greg The Frequent Miler

R: 5 applications or 5 new accounts?

Patrick
Guest
Patrick

I called Chase to inquire about the card and they said they don’t have any online apps available yet. Hmmm…

I then asked about the 5/24 rule (but didn’t use those terms) and they said they didn’t have a card policy per se but multiple factors are considered when applying for a Chase card.

Got the dreaded “7-10 days” message… 8/24, FICO 740, $160,000 income, bank with Chase, over $20k on deposit. This sucks

Tana

I am under the 5/24 but do you think it would be better to apply in branch? I bank with Chase and am in Houston so plenty of branches around.

Holly Johnson
Guest

A data point to share:

Just applied and I was denied for being 8/24. 260K income, credit score in the 800s, a ton of money on deposit with Chase and even a Chase mortgage! She said 8/24 was too much, but I would probably be approved if I was 5/24 or 4/24. She said there was no way to reconsider.

Greg The Frequent Miler
Admin

Thanks Holly (and sorry to hear that!). Did she specifically say 8 new accounts were too much or did she mention either applications or inquiries? Thanks in advance.

Holly Johnson
Guest

Her: “You have too many cards for me to be able to reconsider this.”
Me: “How many do I have? Can you tell me?”
Her: “It says you have 8 including authorized users.”
Me: “Just out of curiosity, how many could I have and potentially get approved?”
Her: “Four or five would probably work, but eight is too many for it to allow me to override.”

One other question – if I do apply and am denied, will the application count towards 5/24 for the future?

In other words, say I got one card in September 2014, and 4 in June 2016. If I wait until October to apply, then I should be at 4/24. If I apply now and am denied, will that denied application count towards 5/24 and mean I have to wait until July 2018 to get under 5/24?

5/24 refers to opened accounts and not apps. While there is no guarantee that you will be approved, this application shouldn’t have an effect on 5/24.

I forgot to mention that the rep said “you are welcome to apply again anytime” at the end of my call. What does this mean? Do I reapply in a couple of months or if I cancel a couple of cards? *confused*

Shawn Coomer - Senior Editor

Probably just standard language they use with all callers. Basically they want you to know that you aren’t barred from getting the card forever. Of course it certainly doesn’t mean the result will be any different if you apply again.

Just got approved and card will arrive in 7-10 business days. Purchase APR is 16.24% (variable). Do you think when I receive the card I should call RE: 100,000 points after minimum spend is met?

Shawn Coomer - Senior Editor

I would just send them a secure message when the card shows up in your online account. That way you have the confirmation in writing. They’ll generally respond to your message within 24 hours.

Just applied in branch at Chase for the Sapphire Reserve card. I’m at least 7/24. The helpful gentleman confirmed I had a pre-approval. Pulled the trigger and was approved. So, I guess 5/24 isn’t always applied for this card. I don’t know if it was considered but I’ve had a Chase Sapphire Preferred for 4 years and indicated I would cancel it if I got this one.

Jon

How exactly did the conversation go when you walked in? Did you specifically mention the Sapphire Reserve? Or just ask if you were pre-approved for any cards?

Thank you!

I did. But I only carry AMEX Platinum (for about a year now) and a Chase United Club Visa (about 4 years now) so I am way under the 5/24 rule.

“Hi, I’m inquiring about the new Reserve Card”
Then a private client associate helped me with the application. The only thing she asked was my gross earnings – $145K.

Then she processed the application and asked me to which address she should send the card.

I can’t believe Chase isn’t relaxing 5/24 in order to soak up a huge amount of $450 fees. Greg any updates on what the heck the exec’s are thinking over there at Chase?

I applied and got the 7-10 message. Do I need to call or just wait to see the results? Looks like most everyone is being denied when calling. I think I have 2 Chase cards and authorized user on 2. Didn’t realize authorized counted against you. If I need to call can someone give me the number?

Greg The Frequent Miler

Recommendation: If you applied and got a pending decision, DON’T CALL. By waiting for the automated process to plow through, you still have a chance of automatic approval. You can still call recon if denied. If you call now, though, you’ll forfeit your chance of automated approval.

I don’t have 5/24. The online application told me they needed more time. Called chase this morning, was onl hold for 10-15 minutes, then they asked if i wanted more credit line or if i was willing to move limits around. I said I wouldn’t’ mind more credit however I’m really most interested in the new card. We moved some credit lines around from two cards and they approved me. Said I should get the card in 3-5 Days, and that they couldn’t expedite it anymore since there has been a TON of interest in the card, since it was leaked online.

Instant approval (arrival in 7-10 days), 794 FICO, under 5/24, $34k credit line.

Will call Chase CSR after card arrives to confirm 100k bonus after $4k spend in 3 months.

Appreciate you helping us stay on top of this, Greg!

My husband app online is pending, and got follow up email that if approved he will get his card in 7-10 day or a letter with explanation if not approved. 9/24, TU 835, Equifax 800., income 100k, has checking & savings with Chase for over 10 yrs.

Anyway, I am 4/24 and decided to apply at the branch for I wish to have card expedited if I am approved for large expense which I am holding off for this card. I am not pre-approved, but went ahead and applied….Approved! TU & Equifax 835; income 100k. I am now at 5/24 counting Chase Reserve card. I am thinking if I should apply for another card with one inquiry. What are my chance of getting Chase Unlimited or Chase Ink. I have Chase Ink Plus that I plan on closing or downgrading to Chase Ink, but would prefer to get the bonus…I think 20 k? However, I only have one business as sole proprietor (rental property). Could I apply for Chase Ink for same business or close my Chase Ink plus then apply for Chase Ink, no AF.

So do we know for sure that if we spend $300 between card approval and end of year, we will get it credited back?

And then any travel in 2017 up to $300 will get credited back as well?

If answers are yes to both, are you able to purchase airline gift cards from their websites like Southwest?

Shawn Coomer - Senior Editor
Member
Shawn Coomer - Senior Editor

The travel credit is automatically issued for any purchase that codes as travel. As long as Southwest gift cards code that way (which I assume they do) then you should get the credit. Additionally, the travel credit has been confirmed to be per calendar year.

I have a question. I have a CSP. After I get the reserve. Can I just transfer my CSP to a freedom unlimited, keep in mind I already have a freedom. I would like both and not want to hurt my credit by closing the CSP. Also, if I can, is there a way to get the sign up bonus for the freedom unlimited?

Thanks

Greg The Frequent Miler
Admin

Yes you can. No, you won’t get the Freedom unlimited signup bonus that way. Another option is to downgrade your CSP to a 2nd Freedom card, then separately sign up for the Freedom Unlimited so that you’ll get the bonus
