Complete guide to Avios: British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus

I find that US residents are often skittish about foreign frequent flyer programs.  Many don’t realize that foreign programs are often the best options for booking domestic flights.  “Avios” is the name of the point currency shared by multiple foreign airline frequent flyer programs: British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus.  Points earned in any of those three programs (or transferred from transferable points programs) can be moved to the other programs.  For example, if you…

How to transfer Avios between Aer Lingus, BA, and Iberia

Aer Lingus, British Airways, and Iberia share a common rewards currency: Avios.  Strangely, despite sharing a currency, each program has its own loyalty program with different award charts and rules.  Since they are partners, it’s often possible to book the same flights with any one of these programs, but your cost will vary (both in number of points required and fuel surcharges). Sometimes British Airways is best: Use BA Avios to fly Aer Lingus from…

37.5K transatlantic biz class: Use BA Avios to fly Aer Lingus from Montreal to Dublin for only 12.5K economy or 37.5K business class one-way

Recently, Aer Lingus announced a new route from Montreal to Dublin, Ireland beginning service on August 8, 2019 that makes for a nice sweet spot on the British Airways award chart, ringing in at just 37.5K Avios in business class or 12.5K Avios in economy class. Sweet spot spotlight: The short story: British Airways only charges 37,500 Avios in business class or 12,500 miles in economy class during peak times for flights under 3,000 miles.  The Aer Lingus route from Montreal…

Membership Rewards to add Aer Lingus as a transfer partner

British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus “share” the currency called Avios, though each program has its own award chart and loyalty program. It has long been theoretically possible to move Avios between your accounts in each of the three programs (British Airways Executive Club, Iberia Plus, and Aer Lingus AerClub), but many people have had difficulty in doing so. Later this month, it will get a little easier to accumulate Aer Lingus Avios since they are…

Now direct transfers from Ultimate Rewards to Iberia and Aer Lingus

Over the weekend, Chase added the ability to transfer directly from Ultimate Rewards to two more valuable partners, Iberia Plus and Aer Lingus AerClub. While transfers have always been possible to make indirectly (See: Bet You Didn’t Know: 3 Methods To Transfer Avios Between Iberia and British Airways), that has been kind of a pain and required some setup. It will be nice to be able to avoid those hoops and transfer directly from now on. As…

Buy today and fly away: Airfares still alive in Business Class and Economy

There have been some fantastic airfare sales this week — with chances to get away to different regions in both business class and economy class. Here’s a summary of some of the better sales still alive: Business Class Europe to the USA from $408 one-way (September-2018) I can’t believe this one is still alive! And it’s wide open. Some dates are as low as $405 one-way and I’m seeing round trip as low as $770. Here’s…

Update: This post references an American Express Business Platinum benefit that has changed.
