Awesome credit card combos

A number of banks have their own points programs, and in some cases it’s possible maximize value by combining the benefits of multiple cards.  For example, you can use one card to earn more points and another card to get the most value from those points.  In this post I’ll take a look at card combos from Amex, Chase, Citi, and Wells Fargo. In each of the below cases, I believe that credit cards are…

Grubhub Perks

Grubhub has launched a new feature in their app called Perks, offering free food and discounts at select restaurants near you. There’s no cost to take advantage of Perks and it’ll stack nicely with the $10 Amex Gold dining benefit. The Deal Get free food and discounts at select restaurants with Perks when using the Grubhub app. Key Terms N/A Quick Thoughts I complained the other day about how Hotels.com was punishing customers that used…

Amex Gold fights back with Boxed.com, and worldwide dining 4X

As expected, Amex publicly announced today that the Amex Gold Card now offers 4X points at restaurants worldwide rather than only in the US.  They also threw in another enhancement…  Remember that $120 per year dining credit where you earned up to $10 per month back for purchases at certain restaurants and food delivery services?  Now they’ve added Boxed.com to the list of available merchants for this credit.  This should make the dining credit much…

Amex Gold lost its shine (for me)

The Amex Gold Card has become relevant again now that it will offer 4X at restaurants worldwide as of June 6th (previously it offered 4X only in the US).  That’s a nice improvement to the extent that restaurants outside of the US accept Amex. Last October I was pretty excited about the Amex Gold Card.  In the post “Is 4X worth $250 per year? How much are those Amex Gold 4X categories (grocery & dining)…

Amex Gold Card To Earn 4x At Restaurants Worldwide From June 6

Gammon steak at a Beefeater restaurant in the UK

When American Express updated the Amex Gold card last year, one of the changes was that restaurant purchases would earn 4x Membership Rewards. There was a fairly large drawback for international travelers though – 4x Membership Rewards would only be earned at US-based restaurants and not overseas eateries. Well, there’s good news on that front today as American Express has announced that the Amex Gold card will earn 4x at restaurants worldwide from June 6,…

Amex and Citi capture my wallet but not my spend

There was a time, not long ago at all, when I maximized my wallet with just two cards: Chase Sapphire Reserve and Chase Freedom Unlimited. I got 3X for travel and dining with the Sapphire Reserve, and I got 1.5X everywhere else with the Freedom Unlimited. Now, Amex and Citi have shattered that approach.

Are cash back cards the new airline cards?

The new Air France KLM credit card launched the other day, and I wrote that the card isn’t particularly exciting. A few years back, I probably would have thought that an airline credit card offering 1.5 miles per dollar was something special — but these days, every transferable currency has a card that earns an equal or better return (and in the case of Air France, they happen to be transfer partners with everyone). Then…

Did Amex’s new Gold card kill Chase’s Sapphire Reserve?

My wife and I each have Chase Sapphire Reserve cards, and our new annual fees just came due.  My previous plan was for my wife to downgrade her card to a no-fee Freedom card, and then I’d pay $75 to add her as an authorized user to my card.  Now, though, a new card has made me rethink my plans.  Now, I’m wondering: should I keep the Sapphire Reserve card at all? Last week Amex…

Is 4X worth $250 per year? How much are those Amex Gold 4X categories (grocery & dining) worth?

The new American Express® Gold Card offers an eye-popping 4 Membership Rewards points per dollar for spend at restaurants and grocery stores in the United States (grocery store 4X is limited to $25K spend per year).  That’s great.  Unfortunately, the card also offers a great big annual fee: $250.  Is 4X worth that fee? First, consider that the card offers other valuable benefits: $120 dining credit: $10 per month credit for spend at GrubHub, Seamless,…
