Amtrak sale: stack w/ discounted gift cards

Amtrak sale is having a 2-for-1 roomette sale that might stack well with current discounts. While I don’t personally travel via Amtrak often, this sale is timed right to coincide with the ability to stack discounted gift cards, a rotating quarterly bonus, and maybe even a shopping portal. Whether or not that all adds up to a deal is likely dependent on your level of excitement about riding the rails, but if you’ve got an…

I used Amtrak points….for a train

This morning, Greg wrote a post called, “Loyalty alchemy. Turn Amtrak coal into United gold, and more…“. In it, he explains how you can take advantage of some interesting transfer opportunities to turn Amtrak and Choice hotel points into United miles. There is some interesting value to be had for sure — see his post for more on that. I loved Greg’s analysis, and some readers even commented on their plans to take advantage of…

Loyalty alchemy. Turn Amtrak coal into United gold, and more…

One of the things that has long fascinated me about points and miles is the fact that great opportunities are sometimes opened up by the ability to convert points from one program to another.  When Marriott bought Starwood and made it possible to convert SPG points to Marriott at a 1 to 3 ratio, I totally geeked out about the many possibilities this raised.  For examples, see: Marriott SPG Complete Guide to Sweet Opportunities Marriott…

[EXPIRED] 1K bonus Amtrak points with SPG

Amtrak is offering 1,000 bonus points when you make a minimum 2-night stay with Starwood and choose to earn Amtrak points instead of Starpoints. While I probably wouldn’t choose to earn Amtrak points over Starpoints in most circumstances, this promotion might make sense if you’re close to a strategic redemption. The Deal Earn 1,000 Amtrak Guest Rewards points points on a stay of 2 or more nights at participating SPG hotels between now and December 31st, 2017. Key…

Transfer SPG 1 to 3 to… Choice?

You already knew that it’s possible to transfer SPG (Starwood Preferred Guest) points to Marriott at a rate of 1 to 3, but did you know that the same is possible with Choice?  This is another one of those Rube Goldberg approaches to miles & points, but this one actually works. When Marriott bought Starwood and let loose 1 to 3 point conversions, all kinds of great things happened.  Suddenly, top tier Marriott properties (45K…

30X Amtrak at 1800Flowers. Here’s why that’s a great deal…

30X Amtrak

Miles Momma reports that Amtrak is offering 30 points per dollar through 1800Flowers.  To get 30X Amtrak points, you must apply promo code AMT56 when checking out.  The offer is good through February 28th. Amtrak points are worth up to 2.9 cents each when used for Amtrak travel.  So, 30 points per dollar is like getting an 87% rebate (30 x 2.9) in the form of Amtrak travel credit.  But it gets better… Spend $50,…

Amtrak 2016 limits premium award seats

Amtrak 2016

Today, January 24th 2016, Amtrak’s new award program has gone into effect.  You can read about the new program here: Amtrak Guest Rewards 2016 — Better than expected. My take and recommendations.  For award travel, the new program has advantages and disadvantages over the previous program.  One of the biggest advantages was supposed to be the elimination of blackout dates.  The new program charges points at a fixed value compared to the ticket price so…
