How to keep your Avianca LifeMiles alive

Avianca LifeMiles is a useful frequent flyer program with a big Achilles heel: miles expire after 12 months.  Spending miles does not reset the clock.  Other issues include their poor website search tool, their mandatory $25 booking fee, and notoriously poor phone customer service. Despite all of this, there are a number of reasons to like the LifeMiles program: Avianca is a member of the Star Alliance.  Since this is the largest airline alliance, it…

Good Lufthansa First Class Availability From The US, But Be Careful…

Lufthansa First Class Awards.

A couple of weeks ago, a bunch of Lufthansa first class awards became available for booking more than 14 days out, although none of that included routes to or from US cities. It looks like that availability might’ve expanded to include some US cities but beware – some of it might be phantom availability. Lucky at One Mile At A Time has found quite a bit of availability from US cities such as Washington D.C.…

Avianca LifeMiles award chart changes

Avianca LifeMiles has announced some award chart changes, set to take effect starting on June 8, 2018. The changes are only for economy class redemptions on Avianca. I haven’t yet had a chance to do a full analysis of the changes, but on first glance, it looks like there are a number of reductions on routes from North America. There are some increases also, but on the whole it doesn’t look bad. The full list of changes can be…

LifeMiles subscription: buy monthly miles from 1.39c each (or maybe 1.41)

Avianca LifeMiles is offering a way to purchase a lot of miles at a steep discount without a large cash outlay up front: you can now subscribe to buy miles on a monthly plan, which looks like it can bring your cost as low as 1.39 cents per mile if you continue your subscription for an entire year — though I think the best you’ll do is really 1.41 cents per mile (which still might be…

My first Avianca LifeMiles redemption: easy as….

A few months back, Citi ThankYou Points added Avianca LifeMiles as a new transfer partner (see our Citi Transfer Partners resource page for a complete list of partners). Last week, Greg posted a new resource page outlining the Best options for domestic first class awards. We’ve since added another hidden gem: Avianca Lifemiles charges 15,000 miles one-way for business/first class flights within and between US Zone 1 and US Zone 2 — which covers 38 of the 48 continental US…

[Expired] Ends today: 145% bonus on Lifemiles purchase (cheap Star Alliance business class)

Ending today, Avianca’s LifeMiles is offering a 145% bonus on purchased miles — and that bonus applies to any quantity purchased. While I’d generally prefer to earn miles through one of the many techniques we write about (and with LifeMiles recently being added as a Citi ThankYou transfer partner, many readers might have a decent stash of points that could be transferred), these miles are cheap enough to be a pretty good deal (1.35 cents each). For…
