Sears Quintuple Dip Results, and why I should have bet more on Discover

Sears Quintuple Dip

In December, I published “A fantabulous but risky quintuple dip.”  Those with Discover It cards that were enrolled in the Double Cashback promotion, had an amazing opportunity for Extreme Stacking. At the time, all of the following deals could be stacked together into one mighty Sears Quintuple Dip: Through December 25th, Sears and Kmart were offering a $20 bonus gift card when you buy a $100 gift card (or a $10 bonus when you buy…

The promo of the year lives on

Sears quadruple dips

UPDATE 9/14/2015: Updated experiment results listed below This year’s best promotion has little to do with airline miles or hotel points.  Instead, it comes from Discover.  In particular, Discover promises to double all cashback earned for 12 months by new Discover It cardholders.  This is a nice perk for those who would otherwise earn 1% cashback from the card for regular spend and 5% cashback for spend within Discover It’s rotating 5% categories.  This is…

Double dipping Discover’s 3rd quarter categories

Double Dip Discover

Thanks to Discover’s offer to double all cash back for a year, their quarterly 5% categories are more interesting than ever.  Now, instead of earning 5% for those categories, cardholders enrolled in the Double Cash Back offers, will ultimately earn 10%. This quarter, July through September, Discover is offering 5% cash back for up to $1500 in spend at Home Improvement Stores, Department Stores, and Amazon.com.  For those enrolled in the Double Cash offer, this…

Only new card members are now eligible. While it’s awesome that Discover will double all cash back earned for spend, especially within 5% cash back categories, the…

Shopping through online portals is often a great way to increase points earned (or to get cash back) for things you would have bought anyway.  Once you know where you want to shop online, I generally recommend searching for that merchant on an online portal finder, such as CashBackMonitor, to find the portal that offers the best rewards for that merchant. For example, yesterday I searched for Macy’s on CashBackMonitor and found that the best…

Practice makes points

This past weekend, Sears ran a promotion in which they offered 9 points per dollar through the Southwest Rapid Rewards Shopping Portal.  9X is very good, but the deal was particularly interesting because the terms and conditions for Sears within the portal had recently changed to now explicitly allow gift card purchases to count for earning points.  This meant that it was possible to buy gift cards to get 9 points per dollar, and then…
