A quick guide to transferable points programs

Amex Transfer Partners

Since I’m a points hoarder, I’m a huge fan of transferable points programs.  These are programs that allow you to transfer points to multiple loyalty programs at a fair exchange rate (often 1 to 1).  By collecting points in these programs, you have the ability to book travel opportunistically.  For example, suppose you’re finally ready to book that dream trip to Asia and you find (gasp) that Delta has the best award availability, but you…

Don’t forget: Select Marriott choice benefits before 1/15

As a reminder, you have until January 15, 2020 to make your selections for 50-night and 75-night Marriott choice benefits. At the very beginning of the year, 75-night choice benefits were not working for several days, but the tool is once again working to make your choice, so it’s worth logging in now and choosing sooner rather than later. At 50 nights, you get your choice between the following benefits: 50 Night Choices 5 Elite Night…

Like a thief in the night: watch out for Marriott’s latest naughtiness

Hacked Hyatt Gift Card

Earlier this week, we had a report in our Frequent Miler Insiders Facebook group about a Marriott mishap that I initially couldn’t believe. A screen shot and a couple of comments later, I found myself scouring data points and finding an alarming number of reports of Marriott changing reservations in the middle of the night or sometimes even in the middle of a stay to charge more points. The more I read about it, the more…

Marriott Ending 10 Elite Nights For 1st Meeting Each Year

And the hits keep coming. In the past, Marriott offered 10 elite night credits for every meeting you booked, offering a relatively cheap and easy way to earn status if you wouldn’t meet the requirements through actual stays. That changed in 2018 when they limited the number of elite nights you could earn to 10 per year from meetings. That’s changing once again, so you’ll now earn zero elite night credits when booking a meeting.…

Marriott changes terms: Hotels can now charge more than Cat 8 price

Update: According to TPG, Marriott has said that they have no current plans to increase pricing on current Category 8 properties. Marriott claims that this change was made specifically for the North Island Seychelles property. Hopefully that holds. Marriott Bonvoy has updated its terms to allow hotels to charge more than Category 8 pricing. It’s too early to say how this will be implemented, but one could guess that it’ll at least apply at the new North…

Marriott Bonvoy Complete Guide

Marriott Bonvoy is the all-in-one rewards program which replaced Marriott Rewards, Starwood Preferred Guest, and Ritz-Carlton Rewards.  Compared to other programs, in my opinion, Marriott Bonvoy offers better than average rewards for paid stays, a strong elite program (but not best overall), best-in-class options for point transfers to airline miles, a huge selection of hotels that run from very low end to ultra-luxury, and credit cards that offer good value for their annual free nights…

New Targeted Marriott offers: More Points Ahead

Marriott is sending out targeted offers to drive stays under the heading More Points Ahead. My offer requires too many stays for it to drive my decisions, but I’ll register nonetheless in case I accidentally hit any of the tiers. You may or may not be targeted for a tailored promo, but people sometimes receive valuable offers like double elite credits or more points for fewer stays than my offer, so it’s worth checking. The Deal Marriott…
