After adding something to my cart at Amazon last night, I saw the following advertisement under my cart, touting 30% off in “select new categories” when using American Express Membership Rewards points:

This is a targeted offer, but it’s worth checking to see if you’re targeted. Yesterday, Chuck at Doctor of Credit reported signing up for a new Amazon account and seeing discounts for various categories. I was surprised to see a discount like this on my long-established Amazon account.

Here’s a link to the promotion landing page (our affiliate link, but remember you can shop through JetBlue for 3x).

Clicking through the ad brought me to the following splash page to the promotion:

It further went on to show me the “select new categories” . I saw the following:

As you can see, my categories were Furniture (with coupon code AXPFURNITURE) and Tires (with coupon code AMEXTIRES).

In order to qualify for the discount, I would need to check out and pay with Membership Rewards for at least part of my order and enter the appropriate promotion code. As is typically the case, the discount is only valid with items shipped & sold by Amazon (no third-party merchants).

I tossed an eligible furniture item into my cart and was able to successfully apply 1 Membership Rewards point (worth $0.01) and the coupon code to save 30%:

Bottom line

This promo is only worth up to $15 and it’s targeted, but if you’ve got a purchase to make in one of the related categories, one Membership Reward point could save you some money if you’re targeted. It only takes a second to click through and see if you’re targeted.
