Update: Chase says breach is fixed

1

This morning, we posted about a possible security breach at Chase bank (See: Potential Chase security breach: Don’t log in?). Chase has since confirmed the breach. According to their news release to Bloomberg, the breach was limited in scope and they “knows of no unauthorized transactions”. I’m not sure that wording inspires confidence, but here’s hoping that nobody lost anything.

As noted earlier, it has been widely speculated that logging into your account contributed to the likelihood of someone getting in. This problem occurred sometime late Wednesday evening into this morning. If you logged into your account during that time, I’d suggest keeping a close eye on your accounts to be as safe as possible. It’s also a good idea to make sure your digital kingdom is locked down as well as possible — see our guide for How to survive the Equifax hack for more on best practices for securing your accounts.  As I recently covered in a week in review post, text message / cell number verification is not the way to go (see this post for a terrible example why), then go back to our guide on the Equifax hack for what you can try instead).
