25% Transfer Bonus from Amex Membership Rewards to Virgin America Elevate & Gold Status

amex virgin america transfer bonus

Through 10/31/2016, American Express is offering a 25% transfer bonus from Membership Rewards to Virgin America Elevate.

The Offer

Get 25% more points when transferring Membership Rewards to Virgin America Elevate. Receive Gold Status if you transfer 80,000+ Membership Rewards points.

Example:

  • 200 Membership Rewards becomes 125 Virgin America Elevate
  • 80,000 Membership Rewards becomes 50,000 Virgin America Elevate

To transfer points, simply add your Virgin America Elevate number to your Membership Rewards account and then go to the transfer section under “Travel”.

Excise Tax Offset Fee

American Express charges a fee equal to $.0006 per point when transfering Membership Rewards to U.S. based loyalty programs (up to $99). For example, a transfer of 10,000 Membership Rewards points will cost $6. Amex gives you the option to use an additional 1,200 points to offset the fee, but that is a terrible deal.

Virgin Elevate Gold

Virgin Elevate Gold status comes with the following benefits:

  • Preferred seating and upgrades to Main Cabin Select
  • Access to the Virgin America Loft at LAX
  • 140% bonus rewards on flights
  • Priority check-in and boarding
  • Free checked bag

Prior to this bonus, the most recent Amex transfer bonus for Virgin America was 50% back in March, but it didn’t have the status offer.

  1. Till when is the Virgin America Gold Status Valid? My main motivation is that this will eventually become Alaska Gold and give me 4 one-way upgrades and free ticket changes. Can you please confirm this Shawn?
