Business Class to Europe + 7 hotel nights for $2225: Investing in Marriott Travel Packages

united polaris

This morning, Greg wrote about some of the potential opportunities that could be in store as the SPG/Marriott/Ritz loyalty schemes meld into one over the coming year(s).  The merger with SPG has presented some interesting opportunities for big wins both today down the road — even for those who do not yet have a large stash of Marriott Rewards points. I recently wrote about the possibility to indirectly buy a Southwest Companion Pass and 7 nights at a…

Bring your favorite passenger: Last chance to buy a Southwest Companion Pass

travel together

One of the best deals in domestic travel has long been the Southwest Companion Pass. This benefit is hands-down my favorite airline loyalty program benefit because it allows you to bring a companion with you for free any time you fly, whether your ticket was paid for with money or points. For a very limited time, there is a roundabout way to buy the companion pass and have a companion fly with you for free for…

Finding gold in old Wyndham points

Wyndham Cottage 8 Bedroom

Last week Wyndham offered a ridiculously lucrative deal.  The first 50 members to call could book an entire “cottage” in Italy, France, Ireland or the UK for just 15,000 Wyndham points per night.  Normally they charge 15,000 points per room per night.  This deal made it possible to book a mansion for just 15,000 points per night. Surprisingly, this deal did not sell out right away.  Or, maybe it’s not surprising.  Early on, phone agents…

New Hilton Honors is better for many. Maybe that wasn’t a middle finger after all…

Hilton New US Credit Card Guide

This morning I published a report about Hilton’s new award program (see: Hilton Honors results are in. Is that Hilton’s middle finger?).  In that post I used charts (published with permission from US Credit Card Guide) to support the argument that the new program is much less likely to result in outsized value than the old program.  I was wrong. There’s a great old book titled “How to lie with statistics“.  One of the many…

Beer lover? “Hop on” this craft brew hotel experience

If all you’ve ever wanted is a beer tap in your room….if an IPA-filled hot tub is your idea of romance….if you can tolerate the risks associated with crowd funding….this brew may be for you. As reported by Travel and Leisure, a Scottish beer company called Brewdog is crowdfunding a 50-room “craft beer hotel” in Columbus, Ohio. Now, to be clear, crowd-funding can be risky. A couple of years ago, I got in on a…

Lounge access for IHG Platinums?

Reader Wayne reports receiving an interesting postcard in the mail from IHG.  The postcard indicates that as an IHG credit card holder and therefore IHG Platinum member, he is entitled to lounge access “where available”.  Our first reaction on this is that it must be a mistake — lounge access is not a listed benefit even for top-tier Spire elite members on the IHG website. However, the card is not ambiguous and Wayne is not the…

Marriott Cat 5 Sweet Spot: JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Resort & Spa

JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Marriott Rewards Sweet Spot

Whether trying to earn the most United miles per dollar or redeeming for a Southwest Companion pass and a 7-night hotel certificate, the value of a Marriott flight & hotel package cannot be ignored. I recently redeemed such a package, which led me to search for an interesting Category 5 Marriott property at which to redeem my certificate. I absolutely found one that fit the bill in the JW Marriott Phu Quoc Emerald Bay Resort &…

It’s always nice to save a few bucks, but don’t forget to compare with…
